Hi,
Anyone using those T4 lights? If you are, could you please relate your experience using T4 and if possible some photos of your tank.
Thanks.

I am using 10 T4s (6 daylights and 4 blues) over my 4-footer.
Great effect but unfortunately not too long lasting (they need replacing after 6-8 months or so)
Will post photos by next week.

Hopefully i'm not mistaken, t4 is PL right?
Check my gallery, i'm using 2x36W t4s. 10,000K tube with Actinic Blue.
If your looking for something that produces less heat as compared to MH, get t5 but they do cost quite alot of money, easily around $200 or more. t5 from what i know(hopefully i didn't make a mistake) are better than t4s and that they have higher output as compared to a t4 tube of the same wattage.

Nope, T4s are not PL lights. T4s are similar to T5s but with a slightly smaller diameter and a much shorter life cycle. A lot cheaper too.
Each T4 bulb are marked at 20 watts but in terms of light intensity are equivalent to a 30 watt standard FL bulb.

Oh. My mistake, sorry. :p

Thanks honkit. Will look out for the photos. PL lights also need to be changed after 6 to 8 months, so no different there. Getting blue actinic PL 36W is darn difficult in Malaysia. T4s are actually sold as "cabinet lights".
Kalib, T5 in Sg are just too expensive, might as well use MH, we can get industrial MH fixtures (like deep_end said few times earlier) for RM600-700 in Malaysia (bulb excluded). Qian Hu in Balakong is selling Arcadia T5, have yet to check them out, maybe will go and have a look this weekend and check out the price.

Yup, t5s cost alot in SG if you buy off the shelf from LFS.

I just bought a 2ft 2x24W T5 for $290.
it depends on the brand that you buy of course. (=

isn't what 88 in KL selling PL? I saw 1 electricial shop in USJ , subang jaya selling MH 150watt. but did not ask how much.
I don't use MH as my friend's MH generates a lot of heat and makes a lot noise after so months. More over I prefer to hang the MH (attached to ceiling) than resting it on the aquarium support.
I havn't seen any T4 or T5? I cann't tell the difference. Anyone can educate me? And compared to PL, y better?
:)

The difference between t4 and t5 is the diameter itself. t4s have a diameter of 4/8" whereas t5s have a diameter of 5/8".

what about the intensity of lights, Kelvins? etc

slcw,
T5 are supposed to be much more intense than PL and much cooler (a very good plus point for small tanks) than other bulbs available. However T5 needs a special reflector, that is why its sooo expensive. 88 sells PLs, but only 6500K, no actinic or other color temp. Same goes with T4, only 6500K and blue tube. T4 sold without reflector, so I'm interested to see honkit's setup. What lights are you using?
Kalib,
are the photos in your gallery with T5 installed?
using 6 PL 36 watt. but I bought actinic lights from them.

Only four of my bulbs have reflectors, the rest are fixed on the hood with the aid of plastic clips as I don't have enough space for anymore reflectors in my hood.
I bought the T4s with reflectors from deep_end.

What sort of corals are you keeping now? I saw a tubustrea sun coral in one of your photos and it doesn't matter what light you have over your tank as they aren't photosynthetic anyway. Downside is that you have to target feed each polyp almost everyday.

The tubastrea was one of the first corals that went in, during my FOWLR days (without any lights)...currently I have:
small Goniopora
small Alveopora
several branches of blue caulastrea (candy cane)
several stalks of blue discosoma and one stalk of rhodactis (hairy mushroom)
tubastrea
open brain coral (cataphyllia I think)
three branches of euphyllia (hammer corals)
The brain coral just introduced last week, hasn't expanded yet. The hammer corals all three branches only show minimal expansion except during the first week in the tank when they expanded beautifully.
Lighting 2x36W PL which I think is enough for all the above and more for a 2ft tank. I'm thinking of using a 24W T4 as my sump lighting.

I asked them about actinics sometime before christmas, and they haven't brought any in yet. Saw some actinics PL at the Puchong shop last week. I got frustrated at waiting for 88 to bring them in so I bought my lights during a trip to Spore last January.

Got an actinic bulb above your tank?
Feeding your corals on a regular basis would help them expand and grow even faster as well as regular kalk dripping.

nsyahron,
Actually, there's a price revision. Nowadays, I can supply you a 150W 20000K Iwasaki bulb complete with fitting for about RM570-590, depending on the fitting design.

I stay in a flat at Wangsa Maju, that's why the 2ft tank. Already got a 4 ft for the arowana. Moving is going to be a pain in the @ss. Still hunting for a house to buy, have zeroed in on a development in Puchong.

That is sweet! That is actually nice for a 2ft tank, only if we can deal with the heat better (with the exception of a chiller).
deep_end, I drove by your shop last Sunday, but it was closed. Do you still have any cyclopeeze left?

nsyahron,
Very sorry, bro, but we're closed on Sundays nowadays. Its just too tiring working every day.
Cyclop-eeze freeze-dried is out of stock, but I still have 1 more can of C-E flake - this is made from exactly the same thing, just that it's compressed into flakes so that larger fish can also see them. Price is the same. I'm negotiating to get C-E direct from the US now, but stocks won't be coming in for at least 2 weeks.

deep_end,
I know what you mean :) working 7 days a week.
I'll wait for the freeze-dried one. Thanks.

Rez,
Oops, actually I just checked this evening, and there's only 1 can left :(
Apparently my landlord opened the other one to see what it was, and actually ate some of it since it smelt so darned good. So I only 1.5 cans at the moment. Very sorry about that.
