Hello everyone again
Lexusmaxus is back ... fishes doing so so ...

first the bad news in the 3ft tanks
favourite male luohans developing scars and holes !
on their faces and it seems to be spreading and worsening
someone dealt with this before ? got solutions ?

I've tried a lot of medicines, pumped in several bottles ...
also changed the filter material and put good bacteria in etc
doesn't seem to be improving the situation

at one point, fishes look lifeless ...
but the medicine seems to help but the holes remain
and seem to getting worse ... someone help

Can try JBL's medication for hole in the head.....
It is tablet form.....
It has helped saved many fishes liao....
Do not drag, will be fatal.....
Do buy those normal carbon and run them in your filtration for some time to remove existing medications in your tank....
After that remove then add medication....
Then find the root of the problem......
What do you have in your filtration??
Activated carbon??

Interesting....
If you one day remember what name, must tell me hor....

HITH starts off usually with one or a few small holes in the head area....
Sometimes must see closely then can tell.....
Only when it drags, the holes gets more and bigger....
Then very obvious.....
HITH doesnt kill the fish instantly.....
But if left untreated, it will be like 'killing' the fish slowly.....

And i think your aunt need to get pimple cream for her LH....
Just kidding.... :D :D

You can get the JBL medication at C328.....
If very far for you, maybe go try larger LFS near your place....

Forgot to add.
If bring your fish to see the doc, please call to make appointment first....
If not may waste your trip down....
Also, can try asking how much it will cost before you go down.....

And i see the pics, i see you got partition your tank....
By partitioning your tank, you will be decreasing the filtration capability as water circulation is reduced and not thorough.....
And most important, try to find out the cause.....
Whats inside your filtration system??

I found the C328 link thanks very much
wah so far away ...

I removed the older ceramic rings
and rocks , I think I should remove the old bags
of carbon and pebbles as well ...

okay I see floating strands of slimy stuff as well
I cleaned up the tubes where the water flows
but can't clean out everything

don't know if it is psychological
every time I do something with the tank
the fishes seem to respond better ?!

I'm using bacterial treater and anti-protoza etc
what does the carbon do actually ?

what else in the tank setup ?
got those black plastic golf balls ... what do they do ?
got some limestone balls as well ...

after putting carbon to reomove existing medication
I put the tablets , will the carbon take away that new medicine ?
so when we use medication should take out carbon ?

maybe that's why the medicines are not effective
aiyah buang current buang money aiyah ...

Removing the old carbon is a must....
There are basically two types of activated carbon out in the market.....
Cheaper ones would be the normal types selling at $1-2 per packet.....
Better grades one would be like Chemipure.....
Activated carbon works on the basis of absorbing colour, smell, toxics, etc....
But after absorbing till saturation, they will release what it has absorbed....
Therefore if got use carbon, i would recommend a change every 3-6 months depending on bio-load of tank.....
Correct me if i am wrong....

Ceramic rings allow cultivation of beneficial bacteria.....
But if got a lot of unwanted waste trapped among the ceramic rings....
It would be good to take them out to wash with tank water or treated water.....
Using tap water which contains chlorine will kill the BB present....

Pebbles must maintain as they trap debris and waste easily....
Mr Cleaner would be a good product for maintenance....

Partition like i said will reduce filtration effectiveness due to reduced water circulation.....
Try to minimise partitioning of tanks only into halves....
Or improve filtration by adding on simple filtration for individual partition.....

I believe those black plastic golf balls will be bio-balls....
They also help to cultivate beneficial bacteria....
But in order for them to work well...
Do not submerge them fully but leave them after in water and half exposed to air....
And also have water running through them....
Best if water is trickled through.....

You get new carbon to remove existing medication....
After that, remove the carbon....
Then you add in your medication.....
After fish fully recover, it will be good to get new carbon to remove any remaining medication....
Get those cheap carbon will do, $1-2 per pack one.....

I changed the carbon and bio-rings
I put the carbon in for a day
then removed to put Melafix in the water
there's a strong medicine smell
and the bubbles become very small and fills the whole tank
cool !
the fishes seem to have improved
but don't know if it is the result of new medicine
or changing of material,
the scars all still there, I don't it will heal
looks like freddy krugger of nightmare on elm street
I guess that's the new name for this zz lh

Very good information portrayed here, haha, thumbs up manz. :)

This is indeed true fishkeeping sharing forum cohesion!!!

Not sure if this has been added into any of the postings here but i will never recommend activated carbon usage as a permanent filtration media in our tanks.

Personal observation lies around that it does increase the chances of incurring HiTH.......and other problems.

Some say it absorbs some minerals which are needed by the fish, some say it leaches toxicity back into the tank......which in turn causes HiTH.

Well "true" in some ways but primarily....think about this...what does carbon do for the novice hobbyist, let ya see CLEAR water.........well there lies the silly perception that CLEAR water means not time for water changes...

And thru water detioration lies the various ways for fishes to get inflicted with diseases and lowering the resistance of it to infections.....

Understand that the crux/essence in keeping fishes healthy is through water changes.......

Activated carbon is like a disillusionary media.......imo, use it ONLY for temporary basis like to get rid of residual medication....perhaps use it 2 days prior to water change etc etc......change monthly is best, get the 5 plan brand bulk pack.

Well, hope more can exploit on this activated carbon issue and understand about why long term carbon filtration COULD lead to HiTH.

Cheers

Nothing beats a reasonable water change......it does give ya fish the idea and mentality to wake up coz ya owner is doing ya a water change....wake up wake up wake up... :D

Well, LHs in general get more proactive after water changes....very common scenario. :)

I'm also very keen to understand what it actually is if it aint HiTH...also the treatment methods, when u noe pls uh oh me......i die die this time will respond to u kekeke. :p

HiTH basically happens to cichlids.........very common once water starts to detiorate......all else bangs in. Little holes are pretty easy to curb, frequent water changes will improve it fast!!!

BUT once....the secondary infection kicks in.....fish will get lesion like wounds on the holes which may spread and this is infected by Hexamita parasite......usually hexamita happens only when ya fish's resistance is really low and water conditions are freaking bad.(still dun wanna change water lar)

Once lesions comes along on the darn holes, it may be super sped up death soon instead of gradually....darkening of fish body with clamness on fins are common, appetite will gradually be reduced etc etc......eventually i think some will say tank stinko!!!

I'm not so into that informative website of all the different parasites coz i dun think i'd ever decipher all and pack it into my brain...hehe......

Cheers and kudos to problem free daze in fishkeeping.

for water change, I was told that for IOS type filter
a water change can be done every 3 months together
with a carbon change ... that was the selling point for IOS filter tank ?

so how much water do you change during water change
people are saying about 1/4 ?

anyway, everytime I wash the filter
I only wash the top layers ,..

the bottom layers won't be rid of the good bacteria
when the chlorine hits them

then I put back a little water with anti-chlorine
and other additives and blue salt ...
and pour it into the tanks

so in a way, the water is constantly changed
a little by a little every 1 week or so

is this an acceptable practise ? thanks !

As mentioned earlier on in my posting.....carbon filtration basically renders clear water and by implementing it together with ANY forms of filtration, clear water will be what u see for a considerable amount of time.......if ya see ti...u'd NOT be prompted to change water.

IOS tank which i prefer to call it IOF(Internal Overflow Filtration)....is by no means having a clearer tank system for some...dependant on amount of bioload.....keep a single fish inside and sure it can last longer for water clarity(even withotu carbon packs) but keep a few more fish stock and thinking dat it can withstand 3 months WITHOUT water changes......ya asking for trouble....gradually ya fishes will have darkening bodies and may even gasp for air........scraping itself against tank bed etc etc.....

Personally IOF will be more of top up of water to maintain that min water level needed to pump back to the output gush.......at max...1 months time, it'd be time for a water change(solitary fish or so).....anything from 30-50% will be be fine.

Personally, i do 30% water changes weekly on my 4x1.5x1.5 IOF tanks........all comm tanks.

Use green wool to cover the base below the white sponge well and u will have lesser problems of having debris go through and having to backflush them......

The essence is still....WEEKLY WATER CHANGES and Clear Water doesn't mean that ur fishes is fine and well....hope that comes across well. :)

one method is to siphon the junk out into a pail
then pour the pail back through the filter , but this is very xiong !
and you have to disturb the water and fishes a lot :confused:

Freddy looks abit scary ya...not yet so much of a mutant yet. :D

Scars will definitely be prominent after HiTH infections...no doubt.....

JBL Spirohexol will help to curb but i don't think it will assist to cover up the drilled holes caused by hexamita ya....

How a fish defends against HiTH is pretty much on it's own immune system.....if there are no further darkening of body and open wound lesions in the holes, white poo and all then should be okay.....most probably mild case which has cured. :)

Just remember to watch the water changes.....

There is a common thinking amongst some hobbyists that fish grows more resistant to diseases which they have recovered from...true in certain ways...a heightened level of resistance....

Nevertheless...imo for HiTH which is prevalent amongst cichlid bloodlines....water detioration will cause it to come back soon enough if not upkept weekly etc etc.....

Think that amount of water change is never comparable to seeing ur fish healthy and eating......that tallies it. :)

thanks, Bro
problems never seem to end

what about cloudy water ?
Freddy now has pop eyes
the tank water noticable cloudier than other tanks

then I notice even after water change and tank clean up
some tanks will still be cloudier than others ... why is this so ?

:( :(

Sorry for late reply, hadn't logged in for yesterday due to bouts of flu...needed the rest. :)

Pop eyes are usually shows after teh fish has been affected by some bacteria infection.....

Stress could be the underlying factor here....treatment wise, siphon half the water out, add in another half treated with anti chlorine like aquaplus.

Keep temp heated to 28 degrees all the time....you may like to try pimafix, lately i tried it on a juvenile LH of about 5" which had impacted cloudy and popped eyes.

WIthin 2 days, cured.......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Water cloudy part can be attributed to many factors.......but try this little tip of switching off your filtration for like 45mins to an hr then let it run.....from there, cut down feeding for one day and feed in small amounts 1 time a day, gradually ur tank will clear crystal clear.
Really many factors, maybe u will like to describe how urwater change and tank cleanup regime is like in detailed??
Cheers.
how long were the plecos in the tank?any signs of injuries/torn finnages other then body/eyes white veil....
white veil in sugar granulated size spots or 1 big lumpy patch?
btw when fishes die, slime coating will drop off and having white lumpy spots on body is common......
how old are the LHs already.......
so many questions but cannot answer ur posting if questions not asked. :)
since the 3 ft tanks have been solded to zidane hey thanks again bro :D
I guess I save on water bill ! :D
interesting update -
cos once the tank has been cleaned and water has been changed completely
I started them on live fish and they just whack and whack and got so lively
even the female lay eggs again ! and they start to fight etc !
but once the eggs died off ... they become more depress ... no joke !
also white stuff seem to appear on the bodies and the water seems cloudy
I changed a bit of water but the cloudiness remains
and the fish more depressed ! how come so funny one ?!
so are the fishes addicted to live food ? :rolleyes:
it's amazing once I feed them live food
all the colors and health bounce back ! :D :eek:
then when all the live fish are eaten up
they are at their peak , so go back to pellets, yes ...
then they become like sick again
at first I thought I was putting too much salt
now I'm switch to another type of pellet,
waiting to see the result ...
Can it be fungus
Bro u might wanna stop feeding ur fish with feeder fish for the time being
If ur fish is really evry hungry give it blood worm , market prawn n stuff
and also
Perform wc , add in more salt and if possible add in general aid as well
Hello everyone again
Lexusmaxus is back ... fishes doing so so ...
first the bad news in the 3ft tanks
favourite male luohans developing scars and holes !
on their faces and it seems to be spreading and worsening
someone dealt with this before ? got solutions ?
I've tried a lot of medicines, pumped in several bottles ...
also changed the filter material and put good bacteria in etc
doesn't seem to be improving the situation
at one point, fishes look lifeless ...
but the medicine seems to help but the holes remain
and seem to getting worse ... someone help
nice fishes!!!!!
