Erm, iv heard that bio balls become a nitrate factory after awhile. So should i wash da bio balls every few months?

For? If its used for a tickle filter, it will be very effective in converting NH3->NO2->NO3. This is often too effective resulting in high nitrates.
Washing them wont do much other than killing the bacteria. If you want to use bioballs, keep them submerged. I used them for breaking the water fall from the main tank.

there will still be NO3 but at a reduced rate. Btw whats yr rationale for using bioballs? They offer low surface area/volume ratio, you are better off using other biomedia.

If cost constraints to other alternate and efficient biomedia, then suggest you use the inexpensive ceramic rings or coral chips.

if uses trickle, replace with LR if u like or leave it bare
