Awww, so scary. :( Wonder what causes his thumb to swell. But wear gloves very hard to arrange things sometimes, like very clumzy, hehe. :D

The most important thing is to ensure open wounds are covered when you work in your tank. Usually, from the cases i've read about, the infection seem to have entered via the open wound when the aquarist works in the tank.

I guess some safety measures we can have is to be wary of any injuries before working in the aquarium, treat any injury we sustain while at work in the aquarium right away and to see a doctor as soon as possible if we have any unusual symptoms(like in his case red streaks and swelling).

feel like vomiting when i saw the pictures :(

But it is true that we are not sure of what organisms or harmful bacteria that can be possibly present in the water. I guess the best prevention is to wear gloves when moving anything.

I know a friend who is keeping reef tank for almost half a year but dont even dare to touch any LRs and livestocks, he either use tongs or net...LOL...I always tease him about that...hehehehe

Be safe then be sorry. :p

I always wear cheap disposable plastic gloves whenever placing my hands in the tank. Not only to prevent getting wounds like that  but also to prevent my fish getting infected from my own hands ;)

what about people who jump into seawater claiming that it cures their wounds? shouldn't they be thinking twice right now?

I shun to think what may happen as I happen to be one of the people who belong to the group above. :P

its quite well known. many people advocate the use of seawater dipping to cure blisters/minor cuts/surgical wounds.

even when I used to be a competitive cyclist, I would always jump into the water after a long day in the saddle *curing of saddle sores. VERY effective*

Heard many time that alot of poisonous thing in sea and tank, but always wondered how come nothing happens to those dealing with marine stuff like LFS and farm. Notice they always bare hand handled those stuffs.
We touches very little compared to them.

Even when we put our hands into the tank and touch LRs, chance is you may be prick by bristleworms. Very unpleasant and felt like a wood splinter prick your fingers. Worst is can't see the bristle as they are very fine. :(
