The What, How, Why, and Whos of AroMedics

Arowana owners, like most of us in this board are faced with demanding tasks in maintaining our fishes’ tanks. Regular water changes, filter maintenance, water conditioning and testing are just some of the routine “rituals” and bare necessities our fishes demand from us.

Most likely, a significant number of us have also been faced with tremendous ordeals and struggles, battling with various diseases and pathogens our arowanas have been stricken with. During these unfortunate occasions, we become our fishes’ doctors, and in some cases, their surgeons. We become their only hope and chance…

How good of a chance we can provide our fishes depends highly on our own levels of knowledge and skills in fish health management. It takes more than just being able to read medication labels. As responsible hobbyists, we should strive for better understanding and knowledge, not only on what medications work well, but also on how to prevent such diseases and outbreaks from happening.

AroMedics forum will attempt to deliver and address the growing need to understand the health issues surrounding our arowanas. The objective is plain and simple and that is to provide the best care for our fishes every time.

We will achieve our objective through continuous learning by:

1. Review Articles: posted and carefully edited by every AroMedics team member.

2. Threads: pertaining to varied health issues posted by anyone in the forum.

The articles will cover all facets of health management. Publication of such on the forum will span days and maybe weeks sometimes, in between articles. Broadly, the topics that will be initially addressed are:

1. Environmental: Common toxins, Temperature, Salt, Water Conditioners, Filtration, PH, etc…

2. Nutritional: Dietary requirements, Color Enhancers and Multi-vitamins, etc…

3. Diseases and Abnormalities: Breathing difficulties, Loss of appetite, Lumps, Popeye, Worms, etc…

4. Fish sedation, anesthesia, and euthanasia.

5. General: Making correct and accurate observations and diagnosis, Creating a history report, Conducting physical check-up, etc…

Everyone is encouraged to participate in the forum. This is our secondary way of learning. Experiences are sure vast sources of information and are most welcome in the board.

However, since all members of the team are well experienced with arowanas compared to other species, we regret to state that we will not be able to address non-arowana health issues. We are also discouraging threads that are non-arowana in nature due to our constraints of time and team size. While we do not hold ourselves accountable for any advice we impart, we still thrive to maintain quality replies with sound information to the fullest of our knowledge. For this reason, again, we do not encourage non-arowana threads in AroMedics forum. Everybody is free to learn and browse, however, keep the threads related to arowana issues.

On the brighter side of things, AroMedics is currently composed of four members:

Isna – A newly trained veterinarian with a keen interest in fish medicine amongst other exciting things. Born and raised in Singapore but currently based in New Zealand, with over 10 years of fish-keeping experience.

Vetduck – A small animal veterinarian practicing in Singapore, with a side interest in fish medicine, particularly that of arowanas.

Hobbit603 – A dental surgeon by profession, but has been into serious fishkeeping for more than 20 yrs.

Emps – A long-time arowana keeper (over 9 years) in two very distinct parts of the world (Philippines and Las Vegas). Ironically, the nature of current IT profession has nothing to do with the hobby, but passion for arowanas suffices.

During certain occasions, 'guest speakers' shall be invited to share their knowledge and experiences in obscure topics such as Ketapang brewing, gill curl surgery, or to post Review Articles.

Again, all of us just have one basic objective and that is to provide the best care towards our arowanas. Let’s equip ourselves with all the right information that will make us better care-givers and hobbyists. After all, we are their only chance…
