Hi,

There is a little (<2mm) transparent lump on my RTG pectoral fin. Doesn't look like fish lice cos it is not flat.... The lump is not getting bigger... but is also not getting any smaller.

Any idea what it is? Is is harmful to my aro?

Thanks in advance!

Sort of pimple like. My aro got some long time back, but disappear in one or two weeks after the filters had run in. Common when water condition is not good enough, I think. Your tank water look a bit cloudy, any reason?

Hi ArowanaTiger ,

From the pics it seems to look similar to what Nauzer's aro had on its pectoral fin as well.
Did the lump suddenly appear?
Has it grown bigger over the last 5 days?
Any other nodules?
Any changes to the behaviour of the aro (eg, appetite & activity)?

If it's similar to what Nauzer's aro had, then it could be a localised inflammatory reaction or a bacteriocystis.

Got your pm, what you've done so far is fine. Give it a few days. Just observe for any more nodules appearing. BTW how big is your aro?

Yes, the lump suddenli appear abt 5 days ago.

So far only one nodule on the left pectoral fin.

Good appetite and normal behaviour.

My RTG is abt 8".

Will observe if the lump get bigger or any more nodules appear. Keep u update...

wow! another lump...
hey ArowanaTiger,
do u have any other fishes with the arowana? ( i'm thinking of trauma or infectious)
what do u feed it?( any feeders, frogs etc?)
there seems to b an outbreak of this condition recently....any ideas what could have precipitated it vetduck?

also, it looks white instead of transparent on the photos. can u confirm this ArowanaTiger?

But yes, no worries man, it seems to b nonprogressive in most cases.....

Currently, there are only one charming phoenix and on ST with my aro. Both of them are healty.

I only feed market prawns and dried shrimps.

Better to say that the lump is translucent...

Cheers.

Hi Arowana Tiger,

Even though I'm a newbie, just would like to share with you that I also noticed similar small white/translucent lump on my aro's gill cover (on the transparent, flapping part of the gill) about 5 days after I brought my aro home.

yesterday, I also noticed another even smaller spot next to the original lump. Was beginning to think it was coloration until I saw the next small spot appears.

Otherwise, the aro is still swimming around, and eating well. BTW, my aro is 6" and it's an aussie pearl jardini. I feed it krills and frozen bloodworms. There are no other tankmates.

My hunch is that your water quality is not good.

These lumps will go away after a while.

No need to use medication. Just improve your water quality.

your hunch about the water quality turns out to be correct.

i just did a nitrate and nitrite tests today and the result is: nitrite 1.6mg/L and nitrate is 50mg/L..in other words high!!

i did a 25% water change and added some salt. i'm not sure how often i should change the water to stablize the nitrite/nitrate level?

the tank is only 3 weeks old (cycled for one week before i introduced the aro in it). i have 2 filter systems: trickle filter and undergravel filter with powerhead. the tickle filter uses bio rings and filter pads as media.

lymphocystis has a predilection for wounds or along the fins.

from the pic, it doesn't look like your typical lymphocystis lesion, but u cannot b 100% certain. since it's an aro, it's most likely a wound acquired from trauma....also, we cannot rule out other common skin bugs just by looking at it. it could b flukes, fungus, columnaris, protozoans etc......

is it eating?
scratching?
breathing harder?

if everything else is ok, perhaps a water change n some salt wil do the trick. keep an eye on it.....most likely it'll heal spontaneously. if not, then u should investigate it further n fill out the questions on ' approaching a case' a the top of aromedics page.
good luck bro:)

so...knock the aro out and do an operation on it

yeah, that's definitely an option.....debride( scrape) the growth, and apply some topical iodine/acriflavine.....:)
