Dear doctors,

yesterday i transferred my 3inch red to a 2ft tank. most of the water is from the 1ft tank and added about 25% of aged water and 25% of anti-chlorinated water to about half of the 2ft tank...

the arowana became very jumpy... jump non -stop.... until one fine minute... it managed to find a small hole in my mesh cover, and jumped out.... it fell to the floor with a SPLAT at about 1metre height !!!

i was so petrified that i could not sleep the whole night... he is resting at the bottom of the tank after i placed him back. When i switched off the tank light, he will swim around again... in a panicky mode...

can see there is some loss scales and the tail fin is torn into half... vertical down...not split fins...something like when someone is performing a surgery on tail cutting halfway like that...

after that i added some salt... and more blackwater....

my concern now is will he suffer injury from the fall ?

the tail now is torn into half... must i cut the whole tail away ?

i think he is too small for transmore...

what to do next ?

i switch off the internal powerfilter... creating quite a current in it...

left only the bubble filter to do the job...

can?

please help...

thanks
desperado....

many sleepless nights ahead....

Hi Toysoldier,

You've done right by switching of the powerhead and reducing the stresses that could further traumatize the fish. (be careful with the blackwater).

Do not attempt to feed now or leave food in the tank, it will dirty the water adding additional/unwanted stress to the tank.

The most important thing now is that your arowana survived the first few hours and there are no extremities like open wounds or a crooked body. You arowana is most probably going to be just fine and active as it first was in another few days' time. :)

Start feeding only then and worry about the tail-cutting later. :)

Alvin.

yeah TS,
if your aro is still alive now, then the prognosis is good. I've dropped numerous fishes, n most survive. as long as it's swimming normally, it should b alright.

As Alvin has said, the most important thing to do now is to ensure the water is good. i would do 25% water changes every 2-3 days, monitoring ammonia n nitrite levels. Is this a new tank?? new filter?? be really careful bro.

also, u should give more attention to salt. salt will prevent the wounds from getting infected, n will prevent it from getting overhydrated. 1 generous tablespoon per 10L. maintain this conc. for the next few weeks. don't guess. b precise.

finally,
check it's breathing.
appetite good?
swimming ok?
water parameters?
If u find any problems or want a thorough workup to make sure things r ok, try filling in one of the checklists on" approaching a case', and we'll get back to u asap.

Experienced this with my silver aro before.....

better add some aquarium salt to calm the aro down .....so as to calm it down from the shock it had from jumping out of water.
Don't worry about operations for the time being as u hav to let yor aro rest first;)

rgds:)

bro and sis,

I own a 3 feet tank. and use wire mesh to cover it up but there are still a few holes there.

what do you use to cover your tank? using wire mesh is just a temporary measure as my aro is still young (ard 8"). I'm looking for a tank cover for my tank but most of the lfs don' t have it? any recommendations?:)

Hi xrtg

Have u try glass??

I'm using glass cut by glass merchant and pasted black Oyama backing on the glass for cover
So far i find it very useful esp. feeding and cleaning

Cheers!

Cheapest option for a cover is to get those light diffusor. I think Pet Provision sells them too. Cut to the correct size for your tank.

I think it's $18 for a 4x2 pc. It's good for a temporary cover, if you weight it down with your lights or something heavy.

if not, there's this shop in Simei central, next to Kopitiam, that sells 3'x18" cover with 1 tube built in light. There's space for overhead filter and holes for external canisters. I think he quoted me $120 for it. The shop sells other DIY hardware
