Hi Les,
Firstly don't panic. How long has it been there? When did you first noticed it? How big is your aro? How is the behaviour of the aro, anything abnormal? Is it still eating?
It will help if you can take pics of it. If it is really the microchip & it is falling out, then you might need to sedate it to get it out.
Would help if you can post us some pics.

What aros have microchips? Just expensive ones? I think it's cruel to put microchips. poor aros.
I think in Indonesia , not use microchips, and no certificate mostly

It is not cruel to implant microchip in an aro. The aro doesn't feel any discomfort with the microchip implanted in the muscle. As the MC is inert there is no tissue reaction to it.
Microchiping of aros are suppose to protect the wild aros. As aros are protected under CITES, only captive bred aros can be sold & microchiping provides the means of identifying a captive bred aro.
Already with such legislation in place, there are still ppl who catch & sell wild aros. Imagine what it'll be like if there was no such legislation; the wild aro community could suffer from extinction.
You shouldn't buy aros without certs or MC,as this would only encourage ppl from selling wild caught fishes. If there is a supply there is a demand. We as hobbists & lovers of this majestic fish, should work to preserve the wild aros.

So your aro has had a decreased in appetite. Is that right?
It is difficult to try to identify the lump without having a look at it. I would be happy to visit & have a look at it. If it is the MC that is being extruded, we can sedate & remove it.
PM me if you don't mind me having a look at it. Can then arrange a suitable time. :)

Had a look at Les' aro. There appears to be a slight swelling, more like a little bulge above the lateral line around mid body. Bulge is only visible when the aro is swimming at a certain angle.
There is also a mild swelling on the dorsal scale around mid body as well. The edge of the dorsal scale appears darker. According to Les the swelling has subsided over the last few days.
The dorsal swelling doesn't feel firm & the dark scale edge seems to be mucus that has rubbed off. Les was worried that the MC might be protruding from the dorsal aspect of the aro.
I don't think it is the MC. Instead, the dorsal swelling could be a haematoma (blood clot) from a jump. The swelling above the lateral line, maybe a superficially implanted MC which may appear to bulge when the aro swims at a certain angle. However I feel that it is probably also a consequence of the possible jump, as the slight bulge is in the area directly below the dorsal swelling.
The best thing to do is nothing. Just to observe for the next few days. The swelling appears to be resolving & the aro is behaving normally.
