My 15cm aro accidentally jump out of its tank... after struggling for a while, its right pectoral fin broke (half gone)... anal fin also broken... My main concern is... will its pectoral fin ever grow back? Thanx...

why yes, there is no reason why it shouldn't, provided u give it the best environment to heal. do water changes, check filter is working, check water prarameters, add 1-2 tablespoon salt per 10L, feed it a varied healthy diet...no worries bro:)

hi all,

i encounter the same problem too. My aro left pectoral was bitten 2/3 off by a PNT when it is about 7inch big. Now my aro is 10 inch big, and the pectoral fin has grown back, well, almost completely, but the problem is it is not as long as the uninjured one. And i became slight bend outwards, the bend starts exactly at the "remainder" portion that was left untouch after the attack.

Now i am thinking of using the "barbel treatment method", using needles prick the tip(the longest) of the pectoral fins,to induce it to grow further, do you guys think it will work ?

As for the bending problem, what are the suggestion to rectify this problem ? any pointers ?

care to share ..... thanks,

Hi mtoh...
how long ago was it attacked??
might just give it more time to grow?

i havn't got much surgical experience..let alone cosmetic sugery.....but i don't think the prickling thing will work......but u might try it as a LAST resort......a picture might b useful to help visualise the problem:D

Ideas anyone?

hi isna,

i've attached a pic that will hopefully illustrate better. This is not my aro, i borrowed this pic from some website. And the illustrated area is on the left pectoral; my aro's problem is on the right pectoral.

Hi... eerr... you mean barbel can regrown??! I thought once lost, they are gone forever? Well, I'm an aro beginner... need enlightenment... Since my 15 cm aro just died (after jumping out from its tank damaging his fins, I put him with the catfishes in bigger tank, next day he was dead), I'm going to buy another one....

hi aroVIOD,

for a good start, remember to cover the tank properly, aro are good jumpers.

Hi mtoh..
nice effort...
yeah..i've got a better understanding....but still not 100% clear..
sorry...
how bout grabbing one of the local AroMedics....hobbit or vetduck or any experienced member to have a look etc..

by the way, 2 mths is probably not sufficient time for the fin to catchup...remember, it has cartilage n bits of bone too....so it's quite a complex structure to regrow.;)

how r your water parameters?
temp?
diet?
check that u r doing all the basic stuff correctly....n try to improve it even if it's good now.......they might help the wound to heal faster.

Hi mtoh,

I don't think pricking it like you would to stimulate barbel growth is going to work. Injury that extensive that involves the hard rays of fins would take quite a long time to completely heal, depending on the age of the aro. Even then, the new ray that grows is usually crooked or softer than the original.

If the new ray on your aro is firm, but slightly crooked, then you're quite lucky. Some have regrown to be soft & wispy; in which case you can retrim it again & wait for regrowth. If firm but slightly deformed, I wouldn't go cutting it again.
