Today is a sad day. Not because is the funeral of former President S R Nathan, but the death of a beautiful ray.
This morning found that the male BD from my friend, was dead floating on the water. All the other fish are behaving alright. Even my female sp ray, which is pregnant, is behaving normal. Really puzzle what had happened to this male. As there is a smell from it and the spots already turn brown, I believe it might have died last night... Anyone can tell me what could had possibly happened to it? Sudden death?

Now I can only hope that the only female ray can successfully give birth to healthy pups of his...

RIP.... :( :( :(

Sudden death syndrome? Sorry for your loss. :(

Shadow7 27-08-2016 09:47 AM

Deepest condolence, may his genes produce u many nice pups. Could it be the fogging ? Saw them doing that the day before.
Ps. Just moved in temporary to the block opposite u :)

Aro77 27-08-2016 02:35 PM

sorry for your loss bro...

Btw the venom in the sting looks dried out. was any other fishes disturbing the fella? no obvious injuries or anything but maybe stressed out. how was appetite?

ThomasLim 27-08-2016 10:41 PM

Thks bro Kirin.

Bro Shadow7, no la, cannot be the fogging... Have been here for the past year and nothing happen even adter fogging... Not sure what happen this time. You shift in here temporary? Rented or what? How come temporary? Which block are u in? Blk67? I can come and see your fish :D

Bro Aro77, venom dried out? How to see? Why does it imply it was disturbed? Can advise? The last time I fed is 2 days ago and I didnt pay much attention that day as I was in a hurry to attend a job... Sad...

Shadow7 27-08-2016 10:54 PM

I didnt see any fish behave abnormally... Or the other fish will still behave normally after they got stung?

Thanks bro :)

This morning is so beautiful. I finally have a small pup from my female ray. The father is my recently passed away male ray... For the past few days, my female ray was 'flying' near the water surface and this really worried me... I am so glad that she finally gave birth... :)

Here are a few pics taken. I just hope the pup can survive as it doesnt really move much at the moment. Any tips what should I feed to the pup? Can I just feed kuning? Should I separate it with the mum?

Happy Happy Happy
Cheers

Congrats on this happy occasion , best would be to separate and put in a floating basket. yes can feed kunning , first fillet it and then chop it small small and throw 1 piece at a time , this way u can monitor if the pup is actually eating or not. try feeding tomorrow onward. Cheers.

u have my number , if u need a basket just buzz me cheers:D

Shadow7 25-09-2016 11:29 AM

Congrats ! Nice pup there :)

ThomasLim 25-09-2016 05:22 PM

Thks bro Aro77 for your kind offer. Really appreciate it :)

Thks bro Shadow7 for your kind words :)

Is it normal that the new born pup not swimming around? Most of the time, it just stationary :( I have just made a temporary holding area for it. Hope it will start moving around soon.... :o

Go get those baskets without holes below then u can observe the food u dropped in if it started to eat and btw the one u using looks uncomfortable to the pup's underbelly :)

Aro77 25-09-2016 05:48 PM

Yes bro. Pls get a proper basket. Best is with a nice flat surface so its more comfortable. This diy one from wire mesh looks like it has sharp stuff sticking out ( likely from cutting the mesh ) may injured the belly if rub against it. Also the food may fall through the holes

ThomasLim 26-09-2016 09:27 AM

Wanted to transfer the pup to my office tank this morning and found that it didnt pull through the night... Now very sad... I am wondering if the wate temperature variation in the outdoor pond is too big for the pup to adapt? Or was it other reasons that caused the death?

Life is short and everything is so unpredictable.... Enjoy and Love while we can....

Well sometime for the first batch the pups are generally weaker. Pump the female up and go for the next round.

sorry for your loss.. difficult to determine the cause of death for the pup as not enough days to observe.. in any case like you mentioned, enjoy and love while we can.. best ensure the female is actively eating and then find her a new male :)

Aro77 26-09-2016 11:29 AM

sorry for your loss bro. little bit difficult to diagnose the issue. was there any rain last night that may have caused a sudden drop in PH? or anything?

perhaps the next batch of pups please have a proper basket and maybe a cover too? since yours is an outdoor setup it could have been too open for the pups? i normally cover my pups basket for the first 2 days for my semi out door tanks as i feel the pups alittle bit uncomfortable in a so open environment.

maybe when ever you free drop me a text i will send you some photos of the basket.

for now just feed the female well and once she is well rested and eating well again then maybe u can consider getting a new male for the FGT. Cheers.

ThomasLim 27-09-2016 05:24 PM

Thks bro for the advise... I will just let her be alone for the moment. Dont feel like introducing any male to stress her and myself :)

Today remove the partition and the other fishes seem happy to have the extra spsce to swim again :)

I have a xbelly high back which is giving me headache... She only takes mealworm and refuses to convert to any other food... No matter how I starve her, no use... Sianz... :(

how long has the fight been going on ? i have 1 that took me a long 3 month fight before accepting kunning , now greedily eating chopped kunning with bones too :D

just continue waiting , monkey see monkey do. they see their friends enjoying the frozens , eventually they will accept when they are hungry.

Bro Aro77, this is a tough question for me :o When I intro this aro into my pond 1+ years ago, it is one of the few aro that being bullied and constantly hid at the back of the pond swimming against the water flow outlet... I cannot do anything and so I just leave it alone to adapt to the environment. After quite a long time (maybe few months later) when I saw it finally swimming to the front. By then I notice one of its eye is gone, very heartache to see that... I also find that it becomes very skinny... Only when it came to the front then I noticed that it is not taking the kuning that I fed. When I bought the mealworm, then I finally see her eating... From then I paid extra attention to her and notice she didnt take any other food except the mealworm :(
I only buy mealworms once a while... So she only eats little, I guess...
Yesterday I notice that her other eye is cloudy as well  I brought home a tank and separate her with med and heater... Hopefully she will recover soon...

Do you think I should dont care and just continue the kuning and no more mealworm? I think she will starve herself to death rather than accept other food :( she is so skinny and weak now...

oh no this is bad. didnt know was so weak already. thought healthy young fella that was not willing to accept frozens.

At this point better to give her what ever she wants to eat and recover her back to good health and perhaps after that may consider either keeping her in a solo tank where she can strive without being bullied or maybe pass her to a friend or someone who can accommodate to keep her in an environment with much less competition and bullies.

ThomasLim 06-10-2016 12:13 AM

Yes bro, trying to save her eye... Still cloudy at the moment... :o

A video to show how tamed my silver is... really my favourite fish as it will just swim to me whenever she sees me coming and allow me to 'sayang' her :)

http://i1371.photobucket.com/albums/...psev7vuwwp.mp4

Btw another of my pump also broke down a few days ago... so both my DAB pumps last around 1+ to 2 yrs before breaking down... :o

i also used to use DAB Pumps finally gave up on them as every time they break down , they trip my house. later i'll take a pic of all the spoilt ones in my storeroom

im currently using Amphi pumps by QH very very good energy saving compared to most pumps. How ever , recently one of them giving out electric , when ever put hand into water kena shock or if i use metal net i will also kena the shocks are really those strong ones not like static how ever dont know why its only me who kena , my helper put hand in no problem. i did Msg QH About it as will be quite wasted to change pump since its working so well but so far no reply. either ways i still bought another pump and going to change it tomorrow as i do need to continue putting my hands into the water and most of my nets are metal so going to be difficult to ''live'' like this..

so far this pump lasted me quite awhile already and still running strong

LauLanChu 13-11-2016 10:52 AM

Your pump has leak somewhere, advise you to change. Probably your maid has a higher pain tolerance or she is wearing some rubber sole. Use a test pen to test for leakage current.

I ever have pump beside tripping my whole house also spoilt the breaker. Lucky just a portion of the house without power. This pump when age water could go into some compartment and cause serious short circuit.

definitely not pain tolerance because the shocks are really strong - to the extend that arm feels little bit weird after the shock. maybe some rubber sole because i dont wear any foot wear while doing my fish work.

yes did do the test pen test awhile back thats why decided to buy new pump , today will be fixing it up. Thanks for the Advise

Bro Aro77, better change the pump asap before something bad happens to u or yr maid or yr fish....

Due to space constraints, it is not easy for me to change other type of pumps... I just hope they can last longer... it is good to have 2 pumps. At least when one is down, I still have the other running to keep the Bio filters working...

Getting tired of maintaining so many tanks & fishes. Maybe get a big tank , keep few of my best fishes and retired from hobby.. meaning stop buying .. now adays still once inawhile when itchy will go and buy some fishes for fun hehe...

LauLanChu 17-11-2016 06:01 PM

This type of 'urge' or 'itch' comes in wave. One moment you get tired and want to quit, next moment and spurs suddenly comes and you cannot stop the craze. I am having this 'transient attack' not sure you folks have the same. The craze also can go from different type of fish.

I have a lot of black algae boom too in my pond, I just keep putting in microlift bacteria into the filter chambers and now the algae reduce a lot. Hopefully, in a week times all the black algae will be gone.

Bro, u using microlift bacteria or MICROBE-LIFT/Algaway 5.4? Can microlift bacteria removes algae?

I am more interested to learn from the expert why and what causes the hair algae to boom? Should we just leave them alone?:(
