GEX Mega Power 2045 & Best Sand - Test on lowering Nitrates

In 2012, we requested GEX JAPAN to commission a test using Mega Power 2045 & Best Sand to see if this small filter can act as a secondary filter to an aquarium tank to lower nitrates.

This test was requested due to its small simple design, slower flow, and possibly when packed fully with media ie sand or other quality media, it can create an anoxic zone for anaerobic bacteria to grow. Here are the results to share with all. We apologised that this test report is late to be shared :o

This is purely a test based on controlled parameters. It however proves an interesting proposition for enthusiasts to try similar methods to control nitrates.

Hope this test gives all some ideas on how the nitrates can be controlled.

Filter used in the test. Set A includes all the type of media used in the original set, Set B has its ring media removed and replaced with Best Sand.

Best Sand (not available in SG yet) is a form of zeolite that includes burnt zeolite and antiseptic zeolite. Other forms of media with high surface area can be used.
