Help - Volitan Lionfish - Cloudy Eye

http://i39.tinypic.com/34yehye.jpg

did some research on common causes of cloudy eye:

stress - unlikely as it is the only fish in the tank

physical damage - as mention above, it is the only fish in tank, unlikely due to fight nor rub against rock

bacterial infection - possible cause, but what could have cause it?

nutritional deficiency - daily feeding, with 1 cube size of EITHER frozen market prawn(50%) OR mysis(20%) OR silverside(20%)
2-3 live mollies OR ghost shrimp occasionally(10%)
% in () shows the estimate frequency

poor water quality - water parameter are as follows
ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 30-40ppm
pH 8.2, temperature 25-27 degree celsius

what should i do now?

thank in advance for your help

Nutritional deficiency maybe a possbility here. You can try to vary the diet further by adding squid, fishmeat(in addition to the silversides, though fishmeat can get messy) to the diet. You can also look at enriching the food with additives like Selcon.

What is the tank lighting? I've read before it can cause cloudiness in lionfish eyes.

If the fish is still eating, I would suggest maintaining or improving the water quality and feed a more varied diet as a first step.

I dont really think water quality is the cause here, the nitrates shouldn't be too high for this fish.

I've read of eye flukes before, it causes such cloudiness but I'm not certain if this could happen to saltwater fish. I only know it can happen to freshwater fish. Maybe introduced through the live molly diet? Again, I'm not sure if this disease exists for saltwater fish.

Maybe you can checkout this thread on WWM as well:

the problem now is its not feeding
will try to widen the type of food if it recovers

36w PL light, with white/blue tube, 4 hours a day

intend to do a 20% water change tomorrow and
maybe another 20% on thursday

iirc FW disease will not affect SW fish
frequent feeding is not advisable as it contain "fats" which is bad for the SW fish

thanks for the link

36W PL should not be an issue so I think we can safely rule lights out.

If its not feeding, that makes things a little trickier and we may want to look deeper into the causes. Doing water changes may help improve the situation.

If the cause is bacterial infection - The bacteria could have been present in the tank all along. It could have struck when the lionfish's immune system got suppressed.

FW disease are likely to not affect SW fish but its possible to have a SW version of the disease. This is much like how whitespot occurs in FW & SW aquaria but caused by two different parasites.

Its possible it may have been brought on by flukes. Check out these references:

Here's a closeup of what I believe is a goby with eye flukes:

i think you are right

not sure if i should continue with water change or do 10mins of FW dip

thanks for the info

Cloudy or opaque eyes may be a symptom of a bacterial infection or exopthalmia, or it may simply indicate a deficiency in vitamin A. Improving the fish's diet and water quality may alleviate the symptoms without requiring medication...im not sure garlic helps with this....>>>??<<<<

did a 20% water change yesterday

tried feeding today but it doesnt seem interested

give it a 5 min FW dip

will try feeding again tmr

wish me luck

i have the feeling is the temp drop n rise...it happen 2 my arowana..sea fishes shouldnt be so different....in a small tank the temp can chng drasticlt..

Depending on the severity, it may not resume feeding so quickly. Did you observe anything collect in the dipping container after you did the FW dip?
