DIY Moving Sand bed filter
Share my past two weeks tinkering.
11 May 2017 IBS today. Totally bushed trying to balance flow rate with different pump heads to achieve total fluidisation of all the sand. One pump head koyak, I forgot to rinse backflow of sand before restarting it. :p Still not 100% of sand fluidised. Need to tinker again tomorrow.
12 May 2017 Changed to river sand. Previously was coral sand from tank substrate : big mistake, the calcium carbonate was dissolving and clouding tank water. Still can't get the river sand fluidised, will need a container with smaller base.
15 May 2017 Finally fluidised properly with change to Denerle Nano Garnelenkies shrimp tank substrate. Container also changed to smaller base footprint.
Clear waters after few days. Second tank, use swimming pool filter sand, #20 sieve size. Much easier, fully fluidised. 15 May 2017 day 1

Interesting technical resource here. http://www.sciencedirect.com/science...44860905001184 Design and management of conventional fluidized-sand biofilters Steven T. Summerfelt , The Conservation Fund Freshwater Institute, 1098 Turner Road, Shepherdstown, WV 25443, USA Available online 19 October 2005. Abstract Fluidized-sand beds are an efficient, relatively compact, and cost-competitive technology for removing dissolved wastes from recirculating aquaculture systems, especially in relatively cool or coldwater applications that require maintaining consistently low levels of ammonia and nitrite. This paper describes several types of flow injection mechanisms used in commercial fluidized-sand biofilters and provides criteria for design of flow distribution mechanisms at the bottom of the fluidized bed. This paper also summarizes the most critical aspects of sand selection, as well as methods for calculating or experimentally measuring fluidization velocities and pressure drop for a given filter sand size distribution. Estimates of nitrification rate, ammonia removal efficiency, carbon dioxide production, and oxygen consumption across fluidized-sand biofilters are also provided for various conditions. Fluidized-sand biofilter operational and management practices are also described |
For those interested in getting the swimming pool filter sand for such a project, please contact Ms Goh : 68965701 to pre order .
Office at Toh Guan Centre near IMM . 20kg bags $22-25 Please specify #20 size sand. |
Water is pumped into the container by pump cannibalized from a dolphin black OHF box set.

Tried to set up a moving sand bed filter in sump first compartment, failed. All sand washed into downstream compartments. Flooded floor too :(
Will try again next week with dedicated container like in-tank set up above. |
Great and informative post, Im always keen to set up a MSF.
But the risk of sand getting into my the pump is always preventing me from starting one. Have tot of doing it like K1 but with air pump. hahaha, hope to try it out soon during school holidays. |
If you have no K1 yet, may want to use Perlite instead of K1 : cheap and good.
I get Perlite from this place, http://www.huahng.com.sg |
Can use those fluidised reactors for marine?

Easier and no trial/error. |
Hmmm... more options always good. Thanks
|
need to cover the top of the container? Do you have full pic of the whole setup?
