Building Of My Platform Pond - A Dream Comes True

Hi all bros, thanks for the advises given in building this platform pond. It really helps me a lot and I am looking forwards it's completion. Currently the fgt is in process of fabricating. Here are some of the pics to share. More will be updated when is available.

Thks bro, I hope it will turn up nice too.
No, I don't think awnings are allowed by the management. So if I have bad neighbours above me, my pond will be 'rubbish collection centre'. But I am quite confident that they are good neighbours. Cross fingers. 😁

Zozo 22-10-2014 10:19 AM

Exciting project . Pls keep us updated.

patclay 22-10-2014 02:49 PM

The soace looks huge. Do keep us posted.

llewellyn 22-10-2014 02:55 PM

Never occurred to you upstairs laundry water, washing floor, window chemicals?
It can be accidential or it can be deliberate.

Shadow7 22-10-2014 03:21 PM

After my friend installed cctv in his balcony the rubbish that used to rain down on his pond stopped ;)

bian27 22-10-2014 03:33 PM

Should be abt 6ft x 8ft? What abt the height?

kenray 23-10-2014 11:09 AM

takanori 23-10-2014 11:46 AM

RELAX 23-10-2014 01:29 PM

always nice to see this kind of step by step project going on
happy for you:)

ThomasLim 23-10-2014 09:10 PM

Thanks all for comments.

Yes, it is always a concern for me that things will start falling from sky. But as this pond area is where the master room is, most of the units close their windows most of the time. Below is a pic I took. So I just hope these windows will remain close 365 days in a year 😆

I understand that any self construct 'shelter' that is to be mounted on the external walls will need relevant authority approval, and it is not cheap for the application. Thus I am thinking if the 'rain' really start pouring, I will get a parasol instead (this one sure approve without additional cost). No choice, already burst my budget...

Haha... I am still doing my best to convince my CO to allow me to have a monster pond. But honestly, I am already happy enough to have such a pond approved from her liao. She has already made my dream comes true, so I better don't push her too hard at the moment. Anyway there is a long way to go and I still have plenty time to brain wash her 😆

For the CCTV, I did intend to install but was told that if the residents complain, then I have to remove. So in the end I didn't proceed with this. So this is temporary on hold.

I understand from the pond builder that the fgt is ready. He is currently waiting for the glass to be delivered to him. Hopefully next week he could deliver the fgt to me. Cheers!

U have to be careful how ur base is constructed.

If there r cases of dengue in ur area... NEA will come and do checks and they may want to see ur drainage or the base of the aquarium is dry.

Or if u have pesky neighbour that compliant mosquito breeding, then u will have some explaining to do.

Cuz ur tank is very openly to all ur neighbour's sight

Vitor 23-10-2014 10:15 PM

Another , dun ganna someone on top start fishing w a line down in ur pond during midnight.

It's good to have a retractable shelter, kopi tiam style, or just cover w netting

llewellyn 24-10-2014 12:54 AM

No offense Thomas,
I think you are too engross with the build of your pond that you are overlooking alot of external issues that you will come to face once your pond is up and running.
Esp the point that Vic brought up on the mosquito, drainage and smell thing.

And I guess your livestock would adds up to maybe $15k?
You just wanna leave them out openly at the mercy of some Tom, Dick or Harry living upstairs?
Bear in mind, not everybody is a fish lover.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with your neighbour chemically washing their window as and when they feel like it.
They dont need your permission...
And its not deliberate, you got no case.

GetzGT 24-10-2014 12:27 PM

Just to check, will fumigation cause any harm to a open pond like this?

zon 24-10-2014 01:03 PM

Heard from a friend of mine. His friend got a pond at his patio and the pple living upstairs gave him a free packet of washing powder into his pond :( maybe you can look into building a shelther?

rtgaroaro 24-10-2014 03:20 PM

1. Jealousy. 2. act of kid. 3. forgot to take medication. 4. act of god. with a shelter will be safer. :)

matthew 24-10-2014 03:31 PM

U can make a lightweight shelter and mount it on top of the fgt.

Ronald 24-10-2014 03:39 PM

From your first picture it seems the unit above yours is not too much higher (unless that's your unit as well). The person on top might not like the sight and noise of your pond as well. You might really want to consider some form of awning or cover up.

ThomasLim 25-10-2014 09:30 AM

Really thanks for all the valuable advises. I have to admit that scenario described by some bros had never come into my mind 😅: dropping fish line from upper unit into my pond to fish; free packet of washing powder, etc. But I know these could really happen if I am unlucky to get just one of this neighbour above me😂

I am currently at the final stage where all my reno and pond are finishing and delivering soon. Thus all I can do is to look into ways to prevent the 'mishap' from happening. Maybe putting some covers over the pond or like what I mentioned earlier, putting a parasol. I believe this is a good learning process for me 😊

Actually I am really touched by my wifey yesterday. I was moody after reading those possible concerns and she came comforting me "Dear, don't worry la, we will have good neighbours above us. Why do you worry so much when you might not even need to. Shouldn't you be happy that your dream is coming true? I thought you always say 船到桥头自然直? Don't worry so much now, we will solve the problems together as they arise along the way. Things will straighten one...."

Suddenly I feel that I am one of the luckiest man in this world, flying to heaven😘
"Maybe we should just keep some simple fish will do..." She added.
Immediately, she sent me back to earth from heaven 😅
Haha... I have a lovely wifey, don't you think so? Love her so much...

Happy fish keeping. Cheers!

patclay 25-10-2014 12:04 PM

It's great you have a wife that is understanding and supporting of your hobby!

Fish keeping is a wonderful hobby. Enjoy it and don't think of the negative factors.

soon 25-10-2014 01:50 PM

Wa so nice, envy you man.

Brichardi 25-10-2014 03:18 PM

Hi TS, I think many bros here has mentioned many points which are valid. Your understanding wife is applauded too but do take note...they are no doubt good neighbours but can u afford to have 1 bad apple?

Kindly update us on the progress of your pond, looks exciting. :)

amiidae 25-10-2014 04:19 PM

Put up a parasol will be a cheap solution. Furthermore, it will minimize falling object and shield off direct sun from the tank.

btw, what are your tank dimensions ?

ThomasLim 26-10-2014 02:22 PM

Thks bro... I probably will get the parasol. Let see how it goes when the pond is done.

The area is 4m x 2m. I am using 4m x 1.5m for the platform pond and 4m x 0.5m for the filter. Cheers.

yanki2 26-10-2014 02:36 PM

any more pic to share?

Bro, why don't u consider putting the filter at the back? This helps to free up more viewing space.

octane 26-10-2014 11:18 PM

the fishing line just reminded me of my childhood. when I first got my rod and reel, I lowered and reeled in my line with weight from 9 storeys high. haha

I also done that when I change line of my reel. ...heheh

ThomasLim 27-10-2014 09:52 AM

I will post more pics when is available. Should be this week... 😊

If I put the filter at the back, it will be very difficult for me to do maintenance, right? There is no access. This is why I arrange to be at the side. No choice leh...

Talking about mischievous act, I remember my neighbour and I "hated" a uncle so bad that we always "try our best" to disturb him when he is coming back from work. Set traps, water bomb him, etc... Very bad 😁 Saying these, I think I have to treat my neighbours' boys nicely to prevent similar acts on me 😅 recalling some past memories are sweet and fun... 😄

onlyyouknow 29-10-2014 10:37 PM

Nice project. I am thinking of doing something similar but it will just be a shallow fgt with wooden decking covering the remaining space on my balcony.
