Will this simple sump setup works?
 

Currently mine tank is running with ohf and canister.
Thinking of if setting up for new tank, may consider with sump tank setup.
Below is the rough sketch of the idea in mind. Wonder will it works?
the main focus I have in mind is something to do with combination of dsb, undergravel filter, refugium.

Not sure if this will work out too well.

Looks like it might be a very difficult system to maintain when the gravel bed finally needs maintenance.

The concept of the gravel is similar to the concept of ecosand system. For there setup is apply on the main tank. Which I believe for their yearly maintenance, required to remove fish from tank n then clean the gravel(likely need to remove).
The one tat I thinking of is a so call easier as compared. Just just remove n wash with tank water n put back. Of Coz. During the maintenence of the gravel, no other maintained involved. Likely just need to top up water which used for washing the gravel.

I can tell you from experience....

When u have over 5 fishes of which at least 1/2 are bigger den 6"...........

The process will take a full day, MANY MANY pails, air pump and backbreaking work to remove the gravel and put back.

My folks used to do tat for a 6 ft tank for like 4-5 years of my life.

needless to say, they cannot figure out the canister system (which i last used) and liked the OHF alot.

Now they super like the sump system.. coz no need climb up and dwn like last time

Forgot to add. For such cases, transmore MIGHT become your best friend. And den u better pray hard the fish you keep can be transmore-d

From what I see. The pump to right side chamber may face problem.

The water travelling from the underground gravel may not be sufficient to fill the chamber at to the main tank. This will happens once your underground gravel are filled up with fish poo.

Just to add on. Plants does not go well with underground gravel filtration. This is also why u do not see this type of setup in aquascaping

The system that I'm trying to come out with is at sump tank. Any maintenance at the sump shouldn't need transmore.

You did say that on an annual basis will need to remove fishes from tank to clean out gravel? If you are keeping bigger fishes you will need transmore.
a 5kg fish can weight like 10kg with the flipping and struggling etc.

Oh. I mention the annual maintenance is base on a company who provide/sell eco-sand system. Likely their main customer is with pond setup. But I do come across from the Internet that a few had apply the system in their main tank.
That what I forsee that the annually maintenance will have to remove the fish from the aquarium tank.

What I suggest is apply similar concept of eco-sand system in the sump tank. Which maintenance at the sump will not touch the main tank, likely only need to top up water to the main tank as some of the tank water will be used for washing the gravel.
