African Cichild's Tank

Thinking of upgrading to 3ft tank as the cichilds.

Young Man 05-01-2015 10:52 PM

good choice. the malawian cichlids will outgrow it soon. may want to upsize the filtration for the current setup too. have fun in your expansion :)

jack_dempsey 06-01-2015 11:01 AM

Did I just saw a Butterkefori in the 2nd pic?
It will create havoc soon

johannes 06-01-2015 06:56 PM

ya, seems like it.. haha
bets if can upgrade lo.. more African fish choices.

:)

Brichardi 07-01-2015 01:46 PM

Thanks for sharing pics!

IMHO, your African cichlid tank is way too small with so many fishes! ...at least 10? Most will eventually die away thru fights in that small environment...until couple fishes left. You may wanna consider QUICKLY in reducing stocks or upgrade into a 3ft tank.

CCT 07-01-2015 08:35 PM

Today just make arrangement to purchase a 4ft glass tank, cant wait for it to arrived. i have more than 30 cichilds in the tank haha, cant resist of buying whenever i go to lfs.
My largest butterefori previouly is the tank king but after i introduce a male m.auratus half the size he seems to be sharing the empire. I thought of diying a filter for the bigger tank

A 4ft tank with so many cichlids would require good filtration. Get a canister or a OHF at least. Overkill filtration is ok too, better than insufficient, hence your idea of DIY filter can be a complement to other filtration. Would suggest NOT to buy anymore cichlids atm until yr tank arrive. Cheers.

Brichardi 08-01-2015 01:57 PM

Nice and spacious....for the moment! :p

BTW why no gravel? ...all coral chips only....Also, you need to invest on another filtration system. :)

CCT 08-01-2015 02:24 PM

That time want to buy white sand but the shop keeper say coral chip. Need to buy more ba last min got it weekend of invest on another filter, going to diy one as well

Tropheus Mixed Tank

Dear all, please advise me on this.

I intend to do a tropheus mixed species tank with duboisi, polli, moorii

What you guys think? and the tank size?

TaNgS_RuLe 22-01-2015 01:56 AM

No issue at all if you mix tropheus, in fact with a larger overall group size, aggression will be reduced. It is really up to personal preference, some prefer more colour, some want uniformity.

The only thing you want to look out for is cross breeding which has been known to occur even between different tropheus types (e.g. duboisi and moorii etc.)

A minimum size of 4 foot is often recommended, but what matters more to the success colony from my experience is colony size, good quality food and regular water changes.

Thanks tangs

looking better with each rescape.
next time, try using rocks of same colour gradient and texture in the same rockpile. per tank just one type or 2types can already.
and pile them in a big pile, rather then a linear pile at the back of the tank to get a more 3D natural looks. but again, scaping is all up to individual preference. as long as you like it, it's good :)

add more rocks for the malawi cichlids.
good idea for you to seperate the tangans from the malawi tank. and remember to add substrate to your new 3ft. otherwise rock slide=tank crack.

actually should use the 4ft for tanga and 3ft for malawi. looking at the eventual size of the fronts and also the colony of tropheus you getting.

I thought of that as well, but currently I have close to 30 Malawi cichlids but around 16 tanga only, so still suggest me to switch?

Pls go to any lfs and buy some substrate....example coral sand or others. For coral sand it costs only $8~$10 per bag (10 kg). Cichlids love sand and will thrive in it.

Young Man 02-02-2015 12:33 AM

if you ask me i would still suggest to switch. becos of the fronts.

the scaping is alright. it will get better as you go along. more worried that there is no substrate in that new tank, should the rockpile slide or fall, the glass gona get the impact bad

Agreed with Youngman. Nobody places big rocks in a clear base tank.....woods and small pebbles ok but not rocks as your base will get a lot scratches eventually and worst scenario....falls and break the glass.

CCT 02-02-2015 12:51 AM

Noted will get the sand asap

Anyway I thought of going beach to get those sand near sea, okay with that?
