Do I need to on air pump for 24 hours a day for Kois?

Hi KOIs rearers?

do you on the air pump for 24 hours a day?
for me, i off it at night after 12 till the next morning.

if i off the air pump, i can't have plants in my container, is it?

at night, plants will take in O2 and release C02.

anybody can advise?

cheers,

I don't see the need for you to turn off the air pump. It consumes very little electricity anyway. Koi demands lots of oxygen, so do turn on it 24 hrs.

They will thrive. Its not a MUST. But filter must be on 24/7

Firstly get the facts right about airpump. Air pump main purposes introduce oxygen & water circulation from the aquarium water. Also good when alot of hobbyists i known watch the bubbles rising up to the surface of the tank & fishes can play with it.:p

Koi needs a lot of oxygen to grow.
The bacteria in the filter also needs lots of oxygen to convert ammonia to nitrite and nitrate.
It would be good to leave the air-pump on 24 hours.
Cheers!

It is extremely difficult if not impossible to reach the optimum desired DO level for Kois so switching off the pump will not help.

Is there any reason why you prefer to switch the pump off in the first place? Noisy or something? Otherwise, it is definitely beneficial to have it on.

Hmm...

Definitely. Unless you have some other method of oxygenating the water constantly. If there is not enough oxygen in the water the Koi will come to the surface to grasp for air which is no good for them. :p
