Returning to Politics

I have decided to return to politics after a long absence.

Two days ago on the 16th of January 2019, twelve likeminded Singaporeans (including some ex PAP cadres and myself) filed an application to the Registry of Societies to register a new political party. This will be called the Progress Singapore Party.

Over the years, a group of us have been walking the ground, meeting many Singaporeans from all walks of life. In my conversations with them, I listened to their concerns, heard their fears and felt their pain. I felt a sense of duty to come forward and represent them in Parliament. So I decided to form a political party to add another voice in Parliament.

The decision to go on our own was not an easy one. I, together with my team, studied the many options offered, like joining an existing opposition party, taking over an existing opposition party, running as an independent and so on. I want to thank all those who made such generous offers. I considered them all seriously and it was a difficult decision, but I feel it is the right one.

Though we are setting up a new party, we still look forward to working with others in the opposition who are passionate about putting country first – before either party or self.

At 78 years, I have a short window that I intend to use mentoring and developing future Parliamentarians who will work for the good of our nation. We want to build a compassionate and truly democratic Singapore where good values and people matter. Freedom of choice and free speech without fear must be defended.

We hope to be given the opportunity for Progress Singapore Party to be an alternative voice in parliament. In due course, as the party and candidates mature, we intend to be ready to govern the nation. In the mean time, we will work with those who share our political beliefs of country first – before either party or self.

We are awaiting approval from the Registry of Societies and will hold a press conference thereafter.

重回政坛

告别了一段时间，我已决定重新回到政坛。

两天前（1月16日）有12位理念相近的新加坡人，（包括几位前人民行动党干部再加上我自己）已向新加坡的 社团注册局提出申请注册一个新的政党。新政党的名字是新加坡前进党。

过去的一年，我们一组人都有在社区活动，与不同层次的国人见面。交谈中我聆听了国人的心声，大家的忧虑与难 言之隐，我感觉到自己有责任在国会中再次代表他们，而且必须成立政党才能在国会中为民请愿。

这条道路不会是一帆风顺的。我研究了各种方案，如加入其他政党，或是接管一个已经存在的政党，甚至当一名独 立人士。在这里我要感谢向我提出建议的朋友们，我经过慎重考虑，决定了，成立新政党是正确的。

在成立新政党后，我们乐意与把国家优先，大于党及个人，理念相近的反对党一起合作。

我已78岁了，只有很短的时间去培养有心从政，为国为民的未来国会议员。我们要维护一个真民主，正确价值观 ，以民为本的新加坡，而且必须保持自由选择及无畏发言的精神。

我们希望大家能给将成立的新加坡前进党一个机会，成为国会里的新声音。向前看，新政党及团队成熟后，要成为 替代政府的机会是可能的。目前的首要任务是要与国家优先，大于党及个人，理念相近的各路人马共 同携手合作。

我们目前在等待社团注册局的批准，一旦收到批文，马上会举行记者招待会。

Before getting too excited, keen to know who those "ex-PAP cadres" are in his potential party that had left the ruling party (probably not of their choice).

i think they are likely retired PAP cadres or Dr Tan's Ayer Rajah constituency grassroot leaders

On a serious note, hat off to him as instead of enjoying his retirement, he chose to do something for his beloved country. 2 years ago, a few of his friends already advised him to stop pursuing his political life but at that time, he was very adamant in his decision.

It will be a challenge to look for a like-minded ppl among the opposition.

And also hope Lim Thean will not be in his party.

Despite knowing the challenges ahead, the ex PAp are coming forth to be a voice for the people.

A party spearheaded by old guards who put the nation before self vs a bunch who put self before nation.

Former presidential candidate Dr Tan Cheng Bock met Lee Hsien Yang, younger brother of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, for breakfast on Saturday (2 February), the second time in three months the duo have been seen together in public amid increasing speculation of an alliance.

Saturday’s breakfast meeting took place at Ang Mo Kio Market and Food Centre in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, located within Ang Mo Kio GRC, which is represented by PM Lee and five other People’s Action Party’s (PAP) Members of Parliament.

Both declined to be interviewed when approached by journalists at around 9.15am. Lee would only say, “Breakfast was good.”

Besides Dr Tan and Lee, four other men accompanied them, and are believed to be Tan’s trusted aides. The group was believed to have gone on a short walkabout around Teck Ghee, the ward inside the Ang Mo Kio GRC helmed by PM Lee.

Met for breakfast in West Coast on 4 November

Dr Tan and Lee were*last seen publicly together having breakfast at a West Coast hawker centre*on 4 November last year.*The hawker centre is in Dr Tan’s former Ayer Rajah constituency where he was a PAP MP from 1980 to 2006.

Dr Tan later wrote in his Facebook page, “This morning I had breakfast with Lee Hsien Yang. We wanted to catch up with each other as we have not met for quite a while.

“It was a good breakfast, not only the food, but the sharing we had on world affairs and the current state of politics in Singapore.”

Return to politics, applied for new political party

Dr Tan, 78, had announced his intention to return to politics on 18 January, revealing that he had*filed an application to the Registry of Societies on 16 January to register a new political party, which would be known as the Progress Singapore Party.*The party is awaiting approval from the Registry of Societies.

His move comes amid speculation that the next General Election, which is due by early 2021, could be held as early as this year.

Dr Tan had contested the Presidential Election in 2011, narrowly losing to Dr Tony Tan Keng Yam. At the end of last year, he announced his retirement as a doctor after practising for 50 years.

On 24 January, Lee*put up a Facebook post backing Dr Tan’s bid*to contest in the upcoming General Election, saying that Dr Tan is the “leader Singapore deserves”.

Benjamin Pwee quits DPP for 'bigger' party with 'recognisable and credible senior leader'

SINGAPORE: Singapore politician Benjamin Pwee has left the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), which he led for six years, for another political party that "has a much more longstanding, recognisable and credible senior leader", he said.

Speaking to Channel NewsAsia on Thursday (Feb 7), Mr Pwee, 51, added that the party he will join has a leader with "parliamentary experience and a good strong and wide support base".

He did not reveal the name of the party, saying he would leave it to them to make the official announcement about his membership.

The DPP's Central Executive Committee accepted Mr Pwee's resignation as both secretary-general and party member on Jan 26. Mr Mohamad Hamim has assumed the role of secretary-general at DPP.

Mr Pwee said that around five members plan to quit DPP and apply to join the new party as ordinary members.

The business consultant added that he is the first to take the lead on resigning from DPP and that "the others will step down in due course".

Regarding the political party he will join, he said: "Their leadership is warmly welcoming of my team and me joining them, as they believe in teamwork, collaboration, and shared leadership."

Mr Pwee's resignation comes as rumours of a General Election are rife and political parties are organising themselves internally to kick off their campaigns, he told Channel NewsAsia.

His resignation also comes weeks after political veteran Dr Tan Cheng Bock filed for an application to form a new political party known as Progress Singapore Party.

Dr Tan, who is a former People's Action Party (PAP) MP, was invited to become the leader for a proposed opposition coalition consisting of the Singapore Democratic Party, the People's Power Party, the DPP, the Reform Party, the National Solidarity Party, the Singaporeans First Party and the People's Voice Party.

Mr Pwee said that the party he will join is a "key leader" in this coalition.

"There is no way small parties like DPP can mount a viable electoral campaign on its own, so this is a good time for my team and I to join the bigger party, to start being involved with their campaign preparations," Mr Pwee said.

Mr Pwee added that "small parties make a lot of noise and fight for attention, but fundamentally do not have the effectiveness" to launch successful and convincing campaigns that could win voters' confidence.

Before he quit DPP, Mr Pwee and the other members who plan to leave had "deep discussions" with the other party and had met several times.

The 51-year-old, who fought in Bishan-Toa Payoh in the last two elections, said he hopes that key significant political parties will come together in the next General Election.

He also expressed hope that his latest move would "encourage many other credible talented Singaporeans to step forward and join more significant political leaders".

"There is definitely a continued strong desire for all opposition parties to come together to partner and collaborate under a common cause," Mr Pwee said.

He was a former PAp fella, mainly at tge grassroot level till he cannot tahan.
Either he is so damned good because his skill is badky needed or he just want to follow the favorite at that time.

Now the eldest sister of the Thai King announces her candidancy for the PM post under Thaksin party. This by itself is a first in Thailand history as the royal family stays out of politics.
Her chances of winning is very much higher.

It will take many more lost elections before Opposition parties disband and unite only under 1 banner, 1 single opposition party. So many parties dilute votes. 同床异梦，一盘散沙。

That Goh is a perpetual hopper. A turn off whenever and wherever he appears. Whichever party that he landed on board is suscidal, can say sayonara to their election bid.

This is what i see in Pwee as well though sometimes he does delivers his points during a campaign. I am not sure whether it is about loyalty issue but i just do not have much confident in him.

I am sure there are lots of moles.

Impression of this Benjamin is like... sail with the tide type of politician. No good impression of such politicians.

At least (my impression of)Kenneth Jeyaratham, tho living in his dad's shadow or who isnt exacty having the real heart for the people, he sticks to his gun.

SINGAPORE: Former presidential candidate Tan Cheng Bock on Thursday (Apr 11)*unveiled the logo of the Progress Singapore Party.

In a Facebook post, Dr Tan, the party's founder, announced that the symbol had been formally approved.

"Our Party symbol is in the form of a palm tree signifying growth, purpose, strength and life," said Dr Tan.

The five fronds of the tree represents the five ideals the Progress Singapore Party subscribes to:*Democracy, Equality, Justice, Peace and Progress, as well as Singapore's multi-racial society consisting of the four racial groups and new citizens.

The tree trunk is in the shape of a person, which represents the party's belief that people are its core interest and source of strength.*The party colours are red, which it says symbolises life, passion, energy and strength, and white, which stands for*purity, integrity and goodness.

"The Progress Singapore Party looks forward to serving the people of Singapore and will work hard to fulfil the ideals to which we subscribe," said Dr Tan.

PSP TALKS #1: “Poverty in Singapore and Policy Gaps in our Social Safety Nets”

Last night PSP held our very first “PSP TALKS”. This is the first of our speaker series of talks and forums to engage on issues that matter to Singaporeans.

In this talk, PSP joined the important national conversation on social inequality and poverty.

I am most grateful to Yeoh Lam Keong, the former GIC Chief Economist, for being our inaugural speaker on the problem of poverty in Singapore. He spoke clearly and urgently, helping us to understand the depth of the problem - that many citizens do not even have enough to meet their basic needs. Singaporeans are deeply concerned about this and that night Lam Keong outlined the nature and scope of the problem, it’s causes and certain urgent policy solutions that need to be taken.

While many schemes have been introduced to help the poor, I agree with Lam Keong that there is urgent need to do more.

The response to the talk was most encouraging and PSP will continue to engage on important issues by holding these talks and forums.

We hope that these series of talks will help rally and inspire Singaporeans to join us in charting this crucial journey of Singapore’s future direction for a better Singapore for all Singaporean’s.
