Just to share the various parrot mouth shape

Most normal bp got triangle mouth

Close Mouth
Can bite you and other fishes because the mouth can close.

Cant bite, can bite, can bite.

When i free i try to take better pics of smiling mouths.

But I hope this thread shows clearly why some parrot fish cant cause much damage to tank mates, due to the shape and restriction of bite of their mouth. IIf this is not logic then i do not know what is logic. The mouth shape of this hybrid cichlid is another aspects which drives cichlid purists mad as well.

Great info!

the closed mouth type can wreak havoc in the comm..
esp when fighting for heriachy...

zhiz22 04-03-2007 07:39 PM

some ppl say i no logic, when i say smiling mouth and open mouth dun cause much damage to tank mate compare to close mouth...

sigh

fireopal 04-03-2007 07:42 PM

open mouth variety...
when they fight..
at most a bit of scratches..
can see the 'beak' area.. turn a bit white..

but when the closed mouth type.. its a typical cichlid mouth tug of war....

Thanks for your info.

Your logic definitely make sense.

Once I was "attacked" by a open mouth parrot. He was like pushing his mouth on my hand. Can feel its teeth but not much damage done unlike those closed mouth parrots. Bitten by closed mouth parrot will left a long scratch marks machiam like Jaws.

Thanks alot for the Info and picture , i think it sounds logic too... close mouth will bite and smiling mouth will bump or at most cause some scratches.

i think depends on the parentage..

some of the juveniles have luohan coluration..

if have other genes, i have seen others with pale dirty yellow colours...
