Japanese perch or Barramundi? Help ID!
 

I got this as a "Japanese Perch". But some people are saying it's a barramundi. And now i'm really unsure... So it would be awesome with some identification help!


When the previous owner had it, it was colored 2 times with those white markings, and the white line along with the forehead that the Japanese perches get. (does barras have that too?)

Barramundi. When barras are young.. also have those markings.. in fact nile perch also have. But when nile and barra grew up, they lose these markings.

The finnage looks more like Barramundi to me.

Huh! :rolleyes: Well allright... Guess i've been calling my fish the wrong name for some time, haha.. So you are sure it's a Barramundi?

How do these fish react when they grow even larger, and want to go out to saltwater?
He's about 22 inches now i would guess. These pics are pretty old, but it was the best i hade of him that you could really see the whole body and how he looks...

Its not often, but he has been showing his markings. I wasnt quick enough to capture when hehad more markings, but do barras also show these coloration then?

What I found from Wikipedia: "It has a deeper body, longer third dorsal and second anal spines, fewer pectoral fin rays, more scales, and fewer gill rakers".

Maybe if you take a clearer picture of the anal fin, we'll be able to confirm the identification of the fish.

Yeah, i found that too. Still couldn't figure it out haha... Can someone post a picture of a 100% japanese perch?

A photograph of the anal fin would be helpful.
