i would say it is possible.. but if the rays are kept in room temperature, no aircond - i do not foresee any requirement of a heater. unless the fish is sick

best is use heater guard. you can DIY your self...

best is use heater guard. you can DIY your self with plastic mesh. as even you stick the heater high up the wall, ray still can climb up and hurt them self..
