I do it the same way but more gently (In-out motion as opposed to a plowing one) as the granules do break down in size. Also do note your mech filtration will "suffer", as in it'll constantly be dark...

The issue is not really with the products...

The issue is not really with the products available but has to do with flow rates of the filter to cultivate anaerobic bac. Products like pond matrix is good for nitrate removal due to its large size...
