Oh. I mention the annual maintenance is base on a company who provide/sell eco-sand system. Likely their main customer is with pond setup. But I do come across from the Internet that a few had apply the system in their main tank.
That what I forsee that the annually maintenance will have to remove the fish from the aquarium tank.

What I suggest is apply similar concept of eco-sand system in the sump tank. Which maintenance at the sump will not touch the main tank, likely only need to top up water to the main tank as some of the tank water will be used for washing the gravel.
