The problem isn't so much the low price of the fish, but the fact that a partially red guppy doesn't have the genes to ever produce a full red guppy.

I was reading awhile back about full reds and there seems to be at least 6 different genes that all need to be for red to get a full red. Coloration of different body regions is controlled by different genes.

You can breed guppies that don't have a red head for a lifetime and never get the gene for the red head.

So if you want to start from low priced guppies, select a group that would have all the body red, just not necessarily in the same guppy. Then you can breed and crossbreed and eventually get a full red.
