Default Denis Cheryshev, Aleksandr Golovin and Liverpool's latest transfer poser

One game, that's all it has taken. One game for Liverpool supporters to rip up their list of transfer demands and scribble down some new ones.

That's the impact a World Cup can have.

The summer's tournament began on Thursday evening in one-sided fashion as hosts Russia thrashed a desperate Saudi Arabia 5-0.

Russians rejoiced. The Saudis were subdued. And some Reds fans couldn't help themselves.

The performance of several Russian players prompted them to reassess who they want to see stepping out at Anfield for the opening Premier League game of the season against West Ham United.

First up, Denis Cheryshev.

The Villarreal left winger didn't even start on the bench for a Russia side considered the worst in generations and missing several key players through injury.

Indeed, it took an injury to another regular starter, the unlucky Alan Dzagoev, for Cheryshev to be thrust into the fray midway through the first half.

The 27-year-old made the most of his opportunity, showing clever feet to score Russia's second before the break and then contributing their fourth with a brilliant long-range finish with the outside of his left foot.

From an also-ran to a national hero, it was quite the turnaround for Cheryshev.

Liverpool were linked strongly with the player during his time at Real Madrid, where he spent four years but only played seven times before moving to Villarreal in 2016 after previous loan spells at the Yellow Submarine as well as Sevilla and Valencia.

Then there's Aleksandr Golovin.

At 22, he is, with some justification, regarded as Russia's great new hope having impressed after coming through the ranks at CSKA Moscow.

Against Saudi Arabia, his crossing provided two assists and his well-struck free-kick set the seal on Russia's dominant win.

Even before the tournament, though, Golovin was reportedly being monitored by Manchester United and Arsenal, although claims after Friday's game suggested he was close to agreeing a move to Juventus.

Some Liverpool fans, though, now want the Reds to reappraise their targets.

Of course, they should know better than to be seduced by efforts in a World Cup opening match.

Look at El Hadji Diouf and Salif Diao, who had both already agreed a move to Anfield before starring for Senegal in their shock win over France in 2002.

We all know what happened next.

The World Cup is a superb showcase, the ideal shopping window. But they've never been the sole barometer of a player's worth.
