Heart got quite a workout this morning. Luckily it didn’t give up.
Same goes for our young guns. The never give up attitude is flowing well throughout the senior and young players. So proud!

Default Liverpool in discussions over Carabao Cup quarter final date as options become clear

Liverpool are in "discussions" with the English Football League to pin down a date for the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

The Reds progressed into the next round after beating Arsenal on penalties at Anfield last night, following a thrilling 5-5 draw in normal time.

And today they were paired with Aston Villa in the last eight.

But finding a spare slot to actually make the trip to Birmingham is proving tricky.

The quarter-final ties are due to be played during the week commencing December 16, but that is when Jurgen Klopp and his side fly out for the Club World Cup in Qatar.

Liverpool will play on the 18th and again on the 21st over in Doha.

The busy Christmas Premier League schedule then follows, so fitting in a Carabao Cup fixture anytime in 2019 looks nigh on impossible.

An EFL spokesperson confirmed today: “The EFL is in discussions with Liverpool FC to identify an alternative date given the Club’s participation in the FIFA Club World Cup competition."

So what are the options for when the match could be played?

Postponement of a scheduled match
This looks like a non-starter.

The midweek games between now and the festive season are three remaining Champions League group matches and the home game against Everton on Wednesday 4th December.

There is surely no chance of rearranging a European clash, and equally no prospect of changing the derby which will be broadcast live on Amazon Prime Video.

Midweek in January
This perhaps looks most likely.

Liverpool will face an FA Cup third round clash on the weekend of 4th/5th January - almost certainly on Sunday 5th given they host Sheffield United in the league on the evening of the 2nd.

That potentially leaves Wednesday 8th free. Although, that midweek is when a potential Carabao Cup semi-final first leg would be due to take place!

But it's conceivable that the first game of a semi could be bumped back a week, so the quarter-final and semi-final first leg could take place in consecutive midweeks with the second leg of the semi a fortnight later.

That would mean a quarter-final on 8th of January, and should Liverpool win - a semi-final first leg on 14th/15th with the second leg on Wednesday 29th.

Rejig the FA Cup third round
More radical, but in theory just about possible.

Liverpool could play the quarter-final of the Carabao Cup on Sunday 5th of January and bump back the FA Cup third round clash.

Should the Reds lose in the midlands, then they would have a couple of midweek options for the the FA Cup game.

But if they beat Villa in the League Cup, the FA Cup game could perhaps be played on 14/15th of January with the Carabao Cup ties in the same midweeks as the other semi-final.

The big stumbling block would be how quickly tickets and travel would have be sorted between the quarter-final (5th) and a possible semi-final first leg (8th) if Liverpool made it through.

Another troubling scenario
Liverpool's advancement in the Carabao Cup has created a fixture headache already.

But there could be another spanner in the works should that carry on.

Whenever the FA Cup third round takes place, there is the potential for a draw to take that to a replay.

The midweek of 14th/15th of January is presumably when a replay would most likely be played - causing possible problems if Liverpool needed that date for the League Cup.

With the first month of 2020 already looking busy and the possibility of two Carabao Cup semi-final games to fit in, another FA Cup fixture ahead of the fourth round proper on the weekend of 25th January would be a big issue.

And that raises the possibility of the Carabao Cup semis extending into early February; less than ideal, but perhaps a necessity if things pan out that way.

100 - Trent Alexander-Arnold is making his 100th appearance in all competitions for Liverpool today. Since his debut in October 2016, only Roberto Firmino (36), Mohamed Salah (28) and James Milner (22) have more assists for the Reds than the 21-year-old (21). Milestone.
