Default Key Chelsea star in race against time to face Liverpool

Chelsea are sweating on the fitness of one of their key players for their upcoming double header with Liverpool.

The Londoners face the Reds twice in the space of four days as they travel to Anfield for a heavyweight clash in the Caribao Cup third round on Anfield before hosting Jurgen Klopp's side in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

However, Chelsea could be without forward Pedro for potentially both of the encounters in a crucial week.

Chelsea won all of their first six fixtures of the season with the Spaniard in the side but laboured to a goalless draw at West Ham United on Sunday to relinquish their 100% record.

The former Barcelona star suffered a shoulder injury in the 1-0 win at Greek side PAOK Salonika in their Europa League opener on Thursday but manager Maurizio Sarri admits he doesn't know yet when the 31-year-old will be back.

He said: “For us, he is very important because he is the best player we have with movement without the ball.

“We are trying to have him at the end of the week, but I don’t know at the moment.”

Matip Hailed

Joel Matip was the only Liverpudlian who made Garth Crooks’ BBC Team of the Week this morning.

The Cameroonian made his first start of the season against Southampton on Saturday and marked the appearance with a goal.

“Something quite special is brewing at Anfield - I can feel it,” Crooks said. “When you have players who are out of the side and desperate to get in, and when they do they perform like they were never away, you know something is going on.

“Joel Matip was that player. The smile on his face when he scored his goal - not to mention the camaraderie between himself and Joe Gomez, two players competing for the same shirt - speaks volumes about the harmony within the dressing room.

“If I was Jose Mourinho I would be very concerned by all this.”

Default Salah's Merseyside derby goal wins Puskas Award

Mohamed Salah has won the 2018 FIFA Puskas Award for his sensational goal against Everton at Anfield last season.

The Liverpool forward produced a moment of brilliance to light up his first Merseyside derby appearance, spinning away from his marker in the area before curling a shot into the far top corner.

And that strike was honoured at a ceremony in London on Monday, topping a shortlist of 10 goals nominated for 2018 Puskas Award following an online poll of fans.
