haha crs dun need tht bright lights.. but the higher Ks will promote algae growth better... crs food is algae mah.. not plants.

10000k or 12000k does not mean the light is "brighter"
it seems brighter only because it's more towards the blue spectrum of the light wave.
6500k light are yellowish and those pink tubes are probably 1000k or 2000k.

intensity is measured by lumens. 6500k has higher lumens than 10000k so in actual sense, a 6500k tubes is "hotter" than a 10000k tube.

also, higher k does not mean more algae. it's probably because algae utilise the blue spectrum better than the plants.... algae is also a plant too
just keep ammonia away and be it 6500k or 10000k lights, algae will not take a foothold

lol... sorry.. algaes are eukaryotes that are photosynthetic capable... not plants. algae exists in all spectrums and ammonia is constantly produced...even when its taken away.. there r other nutrients as well. there will always be the competition between the plants n algae. plants utilise more of the light from 6500 - 8000.. @ 10000K when it is unable to clear the nutrients fast enough, algae will naturally take more of tht role.. there is bound to be more algae in the aquarium.

i would still consider algae as plants, albeit primitive plants.

http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/l...153426748.html

aquatic plants do not grow fast enough in bluer spectrum lights (10000k >) so algae is thus able to grow with the excess nutrients available.
the main nutrient would be light.
if you have a low light tank (<2wpg), even with 10000k or 12000k tubes, you wouldn't be encouraging more algae growth relative to using a 6500k or 8000k light tube.
no matter what kelvin rating, as long as the light level is high, other nutrients for aquatic plant growth must not be limiting or else algae will set in.
