The theory is to use the smallest bio media available in the market for filters which can only hold a small amount of media. Like this you can save those space and fill the filter up with more media.

With that being said, I find the most compact media now in my sump is Eheim's Substrat Pro. They pack so well and easily that I can no longer turn on both pumps for a higher mechanical filtration turnover rate... . Good media nonetheless.

problem is for my HOF, i put media inside both the pre-filtered and filtered comparment.. so first to trap debris will be my shrimplet-safe sponge den my media den the filter cartridge.. Anyway i guess shrimplet-safe sponge traps most of the debris liao.

That's true. I used sponge over my filter's inlet. The fine wool in my canister only finally clogged up after about 2months, although the sponge had to be replaced 2 or 3 times. Medias were sparkling clean.

Also depending on your bioload and fish's diet. I notice some of the more pellet eating one the filter wool tend to clog faster than those on sw diet.

To me, bio media suppose to be dirty but not slimy looking.
