Free Wi-Fi access at all NEL stations, 12 other stations by end-2015
POSTED: 18 Dec 2014 12:27

SINGAPORE: Commuters at all North-East Line MRT stations as well as 12 other stations will get free Wi-Fi access by the end of next year, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Thursday (Dec 18).

The 12 stations are Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Bukit Batok, Buona Vista, Choa Chu Kang, Clementi, Eunos, Jurong East, Khatib, Paya Lebar, Sembawang and Yishun. Currently, free Wi-Fi access is available at City Hall, Orchard and Raffles Place and selected platforms at Bishan, Dhoby Ghaut and Outram Park stations. Wi-Fi-connected platforms can be identified by posters and decals at these stations.

Commuters who wish to access the free Wi-Fi at train stations will first have to set up an account with Wireless@SG. The aim is that, by the end of 2015, commuters waiting for trains at platforms of 32 stations will also get to enjoy the service.

RAIL NETWORK EXPANSION

In its annual rail report released on Thursday, the LTA also gave updates on its existing rail network expansion and upgrading works.

The first of the 18 new North East Line and 24 new Circle Line trains have arrived and are currently undergoing testing, and will be progressively put into service from the middle of 2015, the LTA said, adding that the remaining trains will arrive over the next few months.

Minister for Transport Lui Tuck Yew said: "We will, for the North East Line and Circle Line, eventually see a growth in capacity by about 70 and 60 per cent respectively, so there will be a lot more trains coming in.

"We are not rushing this because this is the first time we are adding trains to a driver-less system, so it is better to make sure by checking them out properly until we are 100 per cent confident they will run without any problems, especially safety-related issues."

From 2016 to 2019, 57 new trains will be progressively added to the North-South and East-West Lines, boosting capacity by about 40 per cent, it said.

Thirteen additional train-cars will also be progressively put into service for the Bukit Panjang LRT system, increasing the fleet size by about 70 per cent. From 2016, 16 new train-cars will arrive for the Sengkang-Punggol LRT, increasing the fleet size by about 40 per cent. By then, modification works for 16 of the 41 existing single train-cars for two-car operations will also be completed.

INFRASTRUCTURE UPGRADES IN THE WORKS

Three MRT stations – Clementi, Commonwealth and Queenstown – will be upgraded, with new station entrances and additional pedestrian link bridges by mid-2015. Works will also start in 2015 to construct a new platform at Tanah Merah station to provide two tracks for trains heading to and from Changi Airport.

Works to replace timber sleepers with concrete sleepers are on track for completion on the North-South Line and the East-West Line by mid-2015 and end-2016, respectively, the LTA said.

“As of November this year, about 76 per cent of sleepers on the North-South Line have been replaced and trains are now travelling at full speed from Yio Chu Kang to Khatib,” it said, adding that the focus is now on lifting speed restrictions for the longer stretches along the line.

The signalling system on the North-South and East-West Lines are also being upgraded to allow trains to run at intervals of 100 seconds, compared to the shortest possible intervals of 120 seconds today.

Upgrading for the North-South Line is on track for completion by 2016, with the new signalling system now installed at more than 73 per cent of the stations and tracks. New signalling equipment has also been installed and is being tested on 14 trains in the existing fleet. Upgrading for the East-West Line will commence in early 2015 and is expected to be completed by 2018.

Next year, replacement works will start on the third rail on the North-South and East-West Lines to improve the reliability of the system. The design and type testing of the third rail components are currently ongoing, with the first batch of materials to be delivered in the first quarter of 2015 and replacement works to start in the second quarter.

To improve the reliability of the North-East Line, its Balanced Weight Anchor wires have been completed, and U-bolts are undergoing replacement.

Noise barrier installation works at Admiralty, Marsiling, and Sembawang stations have also started and is scheduled to be completed by 2016. The LTA is currently evaluating tender proposals to appoint a contractor for the next set of installation works at nine other locations along Bedok and Eunos in the east; and Clementi and Jurong in the west.

NEW RAIL LINES, STATIONS

Construction works for stage two of the Downtown Line is close to 90 per cent completed, and is on schedule to open by the first quarter of 2016, the LTA said, adding that the 16 stations on stage three of the Downtown Line are on track to open by 2017.

The 7.5km Tuas West Extension, which comprises four above-ground stations and a twin-tracked viaduct for both rail and road, is slated for completion in 2016.

A tender has been called to construct the new Canberra station, to be located on the North-South Line between the Sembawang and Yishun stations. Works on the elevated station will commence in the second quarter of 2015 and are expected to be completed in 2019.

The 31 stations on the Thomson-East Coast Line will be completed in stages from 2019 to 2024. Works for service utilities and road diversions as well as piling works have commenced for the northern stretch of the line. For the eastern stretch, civil tenders will be called in early 2015 with works to commence by end-2015.
