I agree with you at this point...
Feeders mostly are cull and hybird which have been bred for feeding big fishes only... Their strains already rojak liao...

But...if you are looking to create something new....say, your own designer guppy. Then no problems....you can look anywhere....feeder guppy, cheaper LFS or even catch from our Longkangs. Who knows?....maybe there is a mutant gene yet to discovered.

ultimately, as with all things, must begin with the end in sight lor...

not say cannot, but must be very clear about what you are trying to achieve.

if the aim is experimentation, then carry on try everything! see a trait that u like, breed, whack, then select the best for further breeding.

but bear in mind also: what are u gonna do with all the culls?

if got a big pond, or an auto-culling machine like an aro, then ok... otherwise, good luck lor... where got space?

Well....I have naturally occuring swallows that appear in my Japan blue line.
Naturally occuring because original parents did not have it, and for many generations also dun have. But after 4-5 years, some swallow tails just appear.

I always have the belief that if you know how to keep fish and not an absolute beginner to fish keeping, you can go for the quality fish. Same effort and expense involved in feeding, cleaning, wc etc whether LFS fish or quality, but more satisfaction with quality fish for sure.

The problem isn't so much the low price of the fish, but the fact that a partially red guppy doesn't have the genes to ever produce a full red guppy.

I was reading awhile back about full reds and there seems to be at least 6 different genes that all need to be for red to get a full red. Coloration of different body regions is controlled by different genes.

You can breed guppies that don't have a red head for a lifetime and never get the gene for the red head.

So if you want to start from low priced guppies, select a group that would have all the body red, just not necessarily in the same guppy. Then you can breed and crossbreed and eventually get a full red.
