Sump 3 Compartment Set up..
Hey All,
My sump has 3 compartments only... 1. intake 2. bio 3 return Can I get some advice on set up from compartment to compartment? I'm a Saltwater Reef guy turned Freshwater so the set ups are uniquely different. Currently I have in this order... 1. top down: fine, coarse, fine, coarse 2. bio, coarse, bio 3. heater and return.... I feel like something isn't flowing right and any advice is appreciated... |

Okie noted on the pics with thanks. I do have some comments but I'd like to clarify firstly, the water flow from chamber 1 to chamber 2. Cant quite reconcile what I think the water flow is like vs the picture (of the partitioning between chambers 1 & 2) - must be my ageing eyes !

following comments am assuming water flow exiting chamber 1 from the base, travels upwards and enters chamber 2 from the top. firstly, my view is that your sump configuration is largely functional (mechanical followed by biological). btw, i like my sump 'neat' and maintenance friendly for lazy me, hence, some thoughts for your consideration:
A. Chamber 1. For ease of maintenance, you could split it into 3 layers. lowest layer - course base (like the blue jap mat in the pic) and the black sponge (in the pic) mid and upper layers - course base and cotton top. when you 'service it' in the future, you could dump (or wash) the top layer (cotton only) and reinsert into chamber 1 as the mid layer ie the original mid layer is elevated to the top. that works for lazy people like me - washing 1 layer at a time ala conveyor belt style. if you wanna wash 2 layers - no issue. bioballs can be dumped in chamber 2. B. Chamber 2 - when youre free one day, bag the loose ceramic rings into a net. in your case, 2 bags per your configuration. when you 'service' it in the future - its easy to remove and manage. also, service 1 bag at a time and never 2 together bcos we lose the bacteria during service of each bag. C. Chamber 3 - put a bag of coral chips there to help buffer water ph. cheerz |
