A substrate question for Burundi
Hi bros
I've a colony of Burundi in a bare bottom tank with rocks, the fish are doing well but now I'm thinking of adding a layer of crushed coral as a new substrate. Should I add the substrate while the fish are in the tank and would the sudden rise in PH by the crushed coral shock my fish as they are rather healthy and active, I'm scared put substrate in and cause problems to the fish. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks! |

I've never added coral chips in tank b4 but I've added coral sand with fishes inside. They seem to be ok.
BTW why are you using coral chips as substrate? From my experience, Fronts like most cichlids love to occasionally sift the substrate and imo crushed corals has sharp edges. |

The reason I'm thinking of using it is due to it allowing to raise my PH by a bit and maintaining it for long duration plus I'm using an internal pump for my OHF so any sand substrate will be sucked in.
My definition of sand is the size 0 type. |

From my experience crashed corals don't alter pH drastically. It is not like those ph up chemicals. It acts as a buffer only.
In fact I just thrown in half a bag into my 1 feet tank with 4 Burundi babies. Think they like it very much. |

just make sure you wash them clean. i dont see much of a problem actually.
and for your OHF pump if you are worried it pick up too much sand, raise it. any filter inlet also can pick up sand be it internal external or whatever. it is how you position and plan it that affects |

My OHF is kinda DIY system, using those internal power head/water pump, like a big square/rectangle box with suction cups on the bottom and kinda heavy so unable to raise it above the bottom, used to keep aro so in a bare bottom tank it was no issue but now convert to fronts again, the type of substrate choice is limiting
