It depends on your budget if pocket deep deep then go for Eheim.

depends on the brand. basically u let the boss know its for "keeping fish". he will know what to recommend. there r cheaper alternatives but i only trust eheim/rena for filters.

My budget is within $300, is it enough to get eheim that's suitable for 4ft tank.
I came across Eheim 2228 for around $280 to $300, not sure if that's the right pricing. Never bought a canister before

If u increase ur budget by another 30-50 u can get a 2028 which comes with medias.

U might want to consider getting a Fluval. Some say it's gd too though personally I use Eheim. I think there r some old thread on Eheim vs Fluval

So eheim 2028 is one option, is there any other brand/model that I can look out for?
Thought I should do some homework before going down to the shop again.

Can try rena xp3 too. But that don't come with medias.

I found a 2nd hand ehiem 2028 abt 1yr old, with hose media and piping for $200.
The seller say can test at his place, think can go take a look.

Any tips on what to look out for?

Check for leaks around the edges and make sure pump is running. Other than that, the 2028 should run for a long long time....
