Lee Li Lian and WP NCMP position
Decision by WP’s Lee Li Lian to decline NCMP role should not be taken lightly: Grace Fu
SINGAPORE: Ms Lee Li Lian’s decision not to take up a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP) seat should not be taken lightly, said Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu on Monday (Jan 18). Ms Fu, who is also the Leader of the House, was referring to the Workers' Party (WP) member’s absence at the opening of Parliament. Following the General Election (GE) that was held on Sep 11 last year, Ms Lee had said that she would not be taking up the NCMP role. In the statement, Ms Fu said Ms Lee’s election to the NCMP seat is determined in accordance with the Constitution and the related legislation, and on the basis of the results of GE. Said Ms Fu: “Like many of her constituents, I learnt first from the media and later from her absence from the opening of Parliament that she is not intending to assume the NCMP seat, despite having campaigned hard to persuade voters to elect her to a seat in Parliament.” Three opposition party members were declared by the Returning Officer as NCMPs in GE2015. They are: Ms Lee, Mr Dennis Tan Lip Fong and Mr Leon Perera from WP. They were the opposition candidates who did not win the seats they contested, but who had garnered the highest percentage of votes, ranging between 39.27 per cent and 48.23 per cent. Ms Lee, who contested in Punggol East Single Member Constituency, had the highest vote percentage among the three elected to be NCMPs. “ About 15,800 voters in Punggol East had cast their ballots for her,” said Ms Fu. “They, along with many other Singaporeans, would want to understand the basis of her decision.” “Taking up the NCMP seat would have enabled her to participate fully in parliamentary debates, raise motions, and ask questions in Parliament,” added Ms Fu. She added that in the event that Ms Lee is indeed declining the role and WP would like to propose an alternative candidate, they have to put it to Parliament for a decision by “moving a Motion at a sitting of this Parliament”. Singapore’s 13th Parliament convened for its first session last Friday, with a total of 89 Members of Parliament and NCMPs taking their oaths in Parliament House. In a Facebook post on Sep 16, Ms Lee explained her decision for not taking up the role of a NCMP. "Majority of the voters in Punggol East decided to not give me the mandate after 2.5 years, and we must respect this. The NCMP role is better suited for an aspiring MP who has no such experience and should take this up to show how he/she can contribute in Parliament," said Ms Lee. She said she had resigned from her job to become a full-time MP after being elected in 2013. However, the commitment required from an NCMP is similar to that of a full-fledged MP, and unlike an MP, it is not possible to be a full-time NCMP, she said. "It will not be fair to my future employer to take leave from work every month," Ms Lee wrote. A third reason she cited was that the WP has "many good candidates". "Hopefully with my decision, Parliament can allow one more from East Coast GRC to be appointed as NCMP. This gives a chance to our other aspiring MPs to show the people what they can do in terms of speaking up for them," she added. On Saturday, Ms Lee posted on her Facebook page that she had already informed Parliament of her decision not to take on the NCMP post. "I understand that the procedure is for me to be absent twice before a Motion can be moved to have someone take up my place, |

Aiya, expected one la... all these fulish behaviours are the norm coming from them. Nothing new, and I expect them to make a bigger fuss than just one fulish comment.
Look at the 'audit' issue for AHPETC then, machiam world ending. IMMEDIATELY AFTER GE, machiam some alien universe, no sound no picture. |
