The remarkable Liverpool landmark that underlines why Mohamed Salah is the best in more than 20 years

Egyptian has outstripped Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge, Fernando Torres, Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard

Another game, another landmark for Liverpool's Mohamed Salah.

Even when emerging as a substitute for the final quarter of the game, there was still enough time for the Reds attacker to notch another two goals in the 3-0 win at Stoke City on Wednesday night.

A rested development, make no mistake.

Salah's brace took him two clear of Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane in the race to be the Premier League's top scorer on 12 goals.

And in all competitions, it means Salah has now scored 17 goals in 21 appearances.

All before the end of November, too.

Indeed, not since Robbie Fowler also notched 17 times before December in 1994-95 has a Liverpool player been so prolific during the opening months of the campaign.

So how many is Salah on target to score should he stay fit and in form?

For some context, Luis Suarez had scored nine in the same timescale on his way to netting 31 in 2013-14, with Daniel Sturridge having scored 11 of his 24 in the same season.

Suarez's best early-season form was actually the season earlier, when he scored 13 of his 30 by the time November was out.

Fernando Torres had scored 10 of the 33 goals he netted in his debut 2007-08 season before the start of December.

In their top-scoring campaigns for Liverpool, by the end of November Steven Gerrard had scored 11 in 2005-06, Michael Owen 14 in 2001-02, and Emile Heskey 11 in 2000-01.

Going even further back, John Barnes was on 11 in 1989-90 and John Aldridge 14 in 1987-88.

And the last time anyone started a season in even better fashion than Salah?

You have have to go back to 1986-87, when the great Ian Rush had thumped home 21 of his 40 goals that campaign.

If Salah comes anywhere near that tally come May, Liverpool fans will be very happy.

Default Can, Hamann and more: LFC's top German appearance makers

Emre Can made his 100th Premier League appearance for Liverpool in Wednesday night's 3-0 win at Stoke City, becoming only the second German player to reach the milestone.

Having signed from Bayer Leverkusen, the Reds No.23 made his bow at the start of the 2014-15 season under Brendan Rodgers,*and featured mainly in defence as he made 27 league appearances in his debut campaign.

The 23-year-old now mostly operates in a midfield role but has not abandoned his defensive discipline, leading the team in aerial duels (11) and possession regains (9) during Wednesday's win at the Bet365 Stadium.

Fellow midfielder Dietmar Hamann was the first German to reach a century of league appearances for the Reds, back in November 2002. Can's countryman went on to win six major titles - including the 2005 European Cup - during his seven-year stay at Anfield.

Striker Karl-Heinz Riedle was the first German to sign for Liverpool, manager Roy Evans snapping him up from Borussia Dortmund in 1997. Six more of his compatriots have since signed for the club, with goalkeeper Loris Karius the latest to join the Reds' ranks.

Liverpool defender Joel Matip and former Red Nuri Sahin were both born in Germany but opted to represent Cameroon and Turkey respectively.

Will Klopp's rotation pay off?

Jurgen Klopp has been making a lot of changes to his starting line ups this term. 48, in fact.

If it keeps Liverpool fresh and firing throughout the winter period it will be well worth it, that’s for sure.

Salah has been a 'revelation' - Reds legend

Phil Thompson admits that Mo Salah has taken him by surprise - labelling the Egyptian a ‘revelation’ at Anfield so far.

“When we signed him in the summer I thought ‘I saw him playing for Chelsea and he didn’t pull up any trees there. He didn’t even look a player’,”
Thompson told Sky Sports.

“But I looked at his stats at Roma, the goals and assists he made and thought ‘Wow’. He has to have something in him to unlock packed defences and he’s been an absolute star this season.

It’s technique and it’s confidence. He’s scoring all sorts of goals and that first one was just incredible. The second one was different. He nicked it off Pieters and was so cool and calm. He’s been a revelation.
