Default Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp hopeful on swift Joel Matip recovery from thigh injury

Jurgen Klopp has suggested Liverpool centre-back Joel Matip could be back in action again this year.

There were fears Matip could be out for a month after he suffered a thigh injury that ruled him out of Saturday's 5-1 Premier League triumph at Brighton and Hove Albion.

The Cameroon defender will definitely remain sidelined for Wednesday's Champions League decider against Spartak Moscow at Anfield and will almost certainly miss the Merseyside derby four days later.

However, Klopp is refusing to rule Matip out for the whole of the hectic festive schedule.

“He has hurt his muscle,” said the Reds boss. “I don't know how long exactly he'll be out, but he's definitely not playing Wednesday.

“A month? No, I don't think so. But as always, it's possible. We have to wait.

“But it's possible that it will be shorter. We will see.”

With Matip absent and Joe Gomez missing with the illness that kept Ragnar Klavan on the bench, Dejan Lovren was Liverpool's only available centre-back at Brighton.

It prompted Klopp to field a back three containing midfielders Emre Can and Gini Wijnaldum.

“Emre needs to do that, like Gini can do that,” he said. “They have to do it, we don't have anybody else.

“I enjoyed it. It was like 'wow, interesting'. We had 20 minutes in training and then we spoke for a little bit in the team meeting before the game again about it.

“But it's not long. It was clear it wouldn't be perfect, but the boys were ready to cope with the difficulties of the new system.

“They did really well.”

Carra backs Klopp's rotation policy

Jamie Carragher has backed Jurgen Klopp’s rotation policy - saying that the Reds boss has learned his lessons from last season.

Klopp has been regularly rotating his squad in recent games and it has paid off, with Liverpool in excellent form.

Carragher told Sky Sports: “They’re in very good shape.

“Liverpool are devastating going forward with Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino now getting a lot more goals.

“The Champions League match in midweek [against Spartak Moscow] and Everton fixture are huge fixtures for Liverpool. It’s another huge midweek and weekend for Liverpool.

I think the brilliant thing for Liverpool is that it’s Jurgen Klopp’s second full season in English football. January was a bit of a nightmare for Liverpool last season because of injuries, a loss of form and Sadio Mane going away.

“But this year he is rotating it much more - he’s changing five or six players each game. That’s not easy to get it right and it leaves you open to massive criticism.

He’s getting it right now - changing players at the right time. He’s got a bench now which looks like a bench a top club should have - he didn’t have that last season. Hopefully you’ll see Liverpool get through this period.

Pawson to referee derby

Craig Pawson will referee Sunday’s Merseyside derby.

He last took charge of a Liverpool game for October’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle.

He was also in charge of August’s 4-0 drubbing of Arsenal.

Default Liverpool to face Everton in FA Cup third round

Liverpool have been drawn to face neighbours Everton at Anfield in the third round of the FA Cup.

The Reds will host their Merseyside rivals on the weekend of January 6 in the standout tie of Monday evening's draw.

The two sides have met in the world's oldest cup competition on 23 occasions, with Liverpool having won 10 of those, Everton seven, and six ending in draws.

They last faced off in this competition in the 2012 semi-final, when goals from Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll earned Kenny Dalglish's team a 2-1 victory.

The Reds have also twice beaten the Toffees in the final at Wembley, doing so in 1986 and 1989.

Default Adam Lallana fitness latest

Adam Lallana will not be involved in Liverpool's Champions League meeting with Spartak Moscow on Wednesday, Jürgen Klopp has confirmed.

Midfielder Lallana was absent for the Reds' away victories at Stoke City and Brighton and Hove Albion over the last week after making his first appearance of the season as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with Chelsea on November 25.

And Klopp told Liverpoolfc.com at Anfield on Tuesday that the No.20 is not available for the clash with Spartak, from which Liverpool need a point to secure qualification for the last 16.

"No, Adam will not be in the squad for this game tomorrow, but he is on a very good way. That's what we thought actually the whole time, and we want to build him up with his fitness and all that stuff," the boss said.

"He is keen, how you can imagine, but meanwhile he is old enough to know there are a lot of important years to come for him, a lot of important games to come for him, and it's not about coming somehow in the next one - it's about being best prepared for all the rest."

Default Jürgen on injuries, Gomez, Klavan and rotation

Jürgen Klopp is ready to welcome Joe Gomez and Ragnar Klavan back into the fold for Wednesday’s decisive Champions League clash with Spartak Moscow after reporting no new injury concerns within his squad.

But the Liverpool boss has not yet made a final decision on whether he will make wholesale changes to his starting line-up in the manner of recent weeks.

Gomez missed Saturday’s 5-1 victory over Brighton and Hove Albion due to a virus, while Klavan was only fit enough to be named among the Reds’ substitutes on the south coast after being ruled out of last week’s 3-0 win at Stoke City due to illness.

However, Klopp revealed on Tuesday that both defenders are available for tomorrow’s Group E match - which Liverpool need to draw to be sure of their place in the competition’s first knockout round - and also said that the rest of his squad came through Saturday’s game unscathed.

“Thank God not so far, but we still have three or four hours to go until we train,” he told Liverpoolfc.com, when asked if he has any fresh fitness worries.

“So last time when I came in it was pretty late when I got the information so we have to wait, but so far no.*

“Yes, it looks like it [Gomez and Klavan will be ready]. They were in training yesterday and did the full stuff and that was good. We didn’t do a lot, it was a bridge day, but what we did they could do. They looked both really well.”

Klopp has made multiple alterations to his starting XI in each of the Reds’ last three games as he bids to keep his players fresh amid the season’s busiest period.

The manager is not yet sure whether he will repeat that policy against Spartak, but insisted he will field the team he feels to be best suited to getting a win that would seal top spot in the pool.

“Actually I don’t know because I have not got the line-up of the last game in my mind at the moment so it’s only to make a line-up for tomorrow,” he continued.

“We never did ‘rotation’ because of being disrespectful of the next opponent or something, we thought so far it makes sense to do the different things to line up the strongest team and that will be the same case for tomorrow night.*

“Yes, you’ll have to wait a little bit for the line-up!”
