Default Reds eye English defensive pair, Strakosha boost and other Liverpool transfer rumours

Jamaal Lascelles and James Tarkowski

Who? Centre-back duo Jamaal Lascelles and James Tarkowski. Everton were linked with Newcastle United captain Lascelles earlier this summer but he is not believed to be on the Blues shortlist while Tawkowski excelled for Burnley last season, helping them secure a Europa League place while also winning his first England cap.

Where? Writing in the Guardian, Paul Doyle reckons Liverpool are eyeing up the pair. They're also monitoring Harry Maguire but he's supposed to be on Premier League champions Manchester City's radar.

What? Both men fit the same profile, young and English (Lascelles is 24 and from Nottingham while Tarkowski is 25 and was born in Manchester) with the capacity to improve but also with Premier League experience under their belt. Either could potentially blossom alongside the world's most expensive defender, Virgil van Dijk.

Thomas Strakosha

Who? Albanian international Thomas Strakosha, who seems to have moved towards the top of Liverpool's list for a new goalkeeper if Alisson and Jan Oblak remain out of reach.

Where? CalcioMercato reckon that that Strakosha's club Lazio are close to signing veteran Belgian goalkeeper Silvio Proto from Greek club Olympiakos which could help facilitate a move to Anfield for the reputed Reds target.

What? Earlier this week, Stakosha's father Foto, himself a former Albanian international who was playing for Olympiakos when his son was born, declared that junior was staying put but perhaps this acquisition could move the goal posts?

Proto is 35 though so is he still a viable number one for the Serie A side or just being brought in as back-up?

Bernard

Who? Brazilian winger Bernard. The 5ft 5in diminutive wide man has been capped 14 times but did not make Tite's squad for the World Cup finals.

Where? Bernard, 25, has announced his exit from Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk after his contract expired and CalcioMercato reckon that Liverpool have targeted him as a potential bargain buy alongside AC Milan and neighbours Inter.

What? Bernard appears to be a like-for-like alternative to Xherdan Shaqiri who has been linked with a move to the Reds and if Jurgen Klopp rates him, he would be even cheaper.

Default 'Steven Gerrard has left LFC Academy legacy'

Steven Gerrard’s spell as Liverpool’s U18s coach has left behind a legacy, believes Academy director Alex Inglethorpe.

The Anfield legend was in charge of the young Reds side for the 2017-18 season before taking up a role as manager of Rangers this summer.

Inglethorpe feels Gerrard has ‘left his mark’ on everyone at the Academy and is confident he’ll go on to prove a success in first-team management.

He told the Liverpool Echo: "Having the opportunity to work with Steven left it's mark, not just on the players but on the staff as well.

"You see the qualities that he brings. I think we've been really lucky to have had Steven here.

"At best, I knew we would get two or possibly three years. We always knew that he would be wanted and having worked with him I can understand why. He's a natural leader.

"He's incredibly dedicated towards achieving what he wants. He's not a man who looks to cut any corners.

"He's not someone who wants to be fast-tracked. He was prepared to come into the Academy and commit in the same way as every other coach.

"I have no doubt that he's on the pathway to becoming a top manager. All he needs is time and a bit of patience from everybody.

"He's in the infancy of his journey but I'm convinced that he will succeed and achieve everything as a manager that he did as a player."

Jack Grealish claims, Thomas Strakosha boost and other Liverpool transfer rumoured rated

The World Cup group stages rumble on - as does the gossip surrounding Liverpool this summer.

Here is the latest from across the globe.

Jack Grealish

Who? The Aston Villa playmaker, tipped for big things as a teenager before slightly stagnating. He enjoyed a better campaign last season at Villa Park but it wasn't enough to help the Midlands club gain promotion back to the Premier League.

Where? Birmingham Live, who have knocked down suggestions Grealish is a target for Liverpool. Tottenham were also linked, but they say the 22-year-old has not been subject to any offers.

What? He is a talented player available at a cut price, but Tottenham are the ones in pole position. Who are we to argue with the Birmingham press?

Thomas Strakosha

Who? Lazio's talented Albanian goalkeeper. He's becoming a regular on here.

Where? Calciomercato, over in Italy. They say Lazio are closing in on Olympiakos goalkeeper Silvio Proto, which would free up Strakosha to move to Anfield.

What? He keeps being linked and Liverpool do need a goalkeeper. Whether Lazio would consider Proto an adequate replacement for their star keeper is hard to reckon with.

Lorenzo Insigne

Who? Napoli's diminutive Italian wide man, who has caught the eye in a dynamic front three alongside Jose Callejon and Dries Mertens.

Where? Well, according to Transfermarketweb (or, as it is known in Italian, Tuttomercatoweb), Jurgen Klopp is eyeing a move for the 27-year-old as he continues his quest to strength the front line. Yet on deeper inspection, they cite the UK media as their source. Hmmmm.

What? Nobody seems willing to take ownership of this particular rumour. There's no doubt he would be a fine addition, but this looks like the perfect case of transfer window inception.

Mario Gotze wants Jurgen Klopp reunion - but he isn't Liverpool's Nabil Fekir replacemen

The comments were timed expertly.

As Liverpool's big-money move for Nabil Fekir began to hit the rocks, there was Mario Gotze , professing his love of working with former manager Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds' failure to land Lyon captain Fekir has been well documented, and their inability - or reluctance - to complete a £48.4million deal for the France international has sharply thrust the need for a replacement back into the foreground of Klopp's thinking.

As the Reds manager might have been weighing up possible replacements on Sunday, comments from Gotze telling the world how he sees Klopp as his "footballing father" were being repeatedly published.

Speaking on a special 'Being Mario Gotze' documentary, he revealed he would like to play under Klopp once more.

"I decided to leave Bayern and Jurgen Klopp was interested in getting me to Liverpool," he said.

"And I was also interested in working with him again. [The desire to play for him] still exists. He is a world-class coach and that's why it's always an option.

"I decided to join Borussia Dortmund, but it was not a decision against Liverpool or Jurgen Klopp."

The timing of the comments were purely coincidental to the collapse of the Fekir deal, but perhaps they helped shift the focus once the OL skipper's move had fallen through?

Gotze's star has slipped dramatically since he netted the decisive goal in the World Cup final for Germany four years ago. So much so that there is no place for the 26-year-old attacking midfielder in the world champions' squad.

The Borussia Dortmund midfielder was diagnosed with a rare condition which was cited as 'metabolic disturbances' in January 2017. It put paid to his season and saw him sidelined August.

And Gotze has largely failed to discover the magic that once saw him touted as one of the finest young players in European football since.

The German has struggled since his return to Westfalenstadion in 2016 and has made just 34 league appearances in the past two seasons.

Last season saw his form decline sharply at the business end, with Gotze contributing just one assist in his last nine league games as BVB limped to a fourth-place finish courtesy of their goal difference.

Klopp admitted that he greeted the news Gotze's defection to Bayern Munich in 2013 with profound sadness , saying: "It was like a heart attack."

However, there should be little tears shed if Liverpool pass up the chance to re-unite Gotze with his 'footballing father' in the wake of the Fekir saga.

Wishing a very happy birthday to two Liverpool goalkeepers today.

Loris Karius and Danny Ward both share a birthday on June 22 - and they both turn 25 today.

Fenerbahce's Buvac interest over

It looks as though Fenerbahce’s interest in Zeljko Buvac is over after PSV announced that Phillip Cocu will be joining the Turkish side as their new head coach.

It was regularly reported over the past couple of weeks that Fenerbhace were keen on taking Buvac to Turkey to end his association with the Reds for good, after he left the club at the end of April.

Liverpool have always insisted he remains an employee, but sporting director Damien Comolli wanted Buvac to become their new manager. However, it will be Cocu who will be in charge next season.

What this means for Buvac at Anfield however remains unclear at this stage.

Grujic in demand

An interesting line from Turkish publication Fotomac - via teamtalk.com - that claims that Galatasaray have tabled an offer for Marko Grujic.

The Serbian midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan at Cardiff and played a part in their promotion to the Premier League.

Lazio have since been linked with Grujic as well as the Bluebirds themselves, but it’s Galatasaray who are said to be leading the chase at present, according to Fotomac.

"Cardiff City could be about to lose out on Liverpool’s Marko Grujic, after it was revealed that Galatasaray have made an offer.

According to Fotomac, Liverpool are willing to accept £10m for the Serbian midfielder, who has previously been dubbed ‘the new Nemanja Matic’.

Turkish champions Galatasaray are also willing to consider a loan deal, as they are bound by Financial Fair Play restrictions, and are confident of signing the 22-year-old.

Grujic was Jurgen Klopp’s first signing as Liverpool manager but has failed to establish himself in the first team. Over a two-year spell, he has made just eight appearances in the Premier League, all of which have come from the bench.”

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique has opened up on his secret cancer battle which almost left him blind.

The 32-year-old learned that he had a rare brain tumour just a month ago after suffering from headaches and migraines during a trip to England.

Enrique underwent emergency nine-hour surgery on the tumour, which was located behind his eye. He is now in recovery but is forced to wear a patch.

"All this makes you value life more. Footballers live in a bubble. It's an unreal life, you lose yourself and you think you're invincible," he said.

Get Well Soon Jose Enrique.
We all are with you.
