If you put these aside and just look at physical characteristics (choosing potential female and jumbo size), these are some of the characteristics that people look for:-

1.) Long head with a broad snout/mouth
2.) Broad shoulder
3.) The long shoulder (ie from end of the head to the start of the dorsal fin)
4.) Long Dorsal fin
5.) Broad tail tube
6.) Small caudal fin
7.) Broad body height
8.) Visible T bone
9.) Round shape pectoral fins (choosing for female)

The above list is not exhaustive and likely to have more pointers.

Giant Koi (aka Jumbo) are from the same parents as normal koi. In every batch of fries (assuming they are are from pedigree parents), there will be some that will grow bigger and longer (more than 80cm) than the others when they mature. The Japanese Koi breeders know the bloodline of their fries and can identify (with certain accuracy) which fries can grow to Jumbo size and which can't. They will keep these Jumbo potentials in mud ponds to sell them at higher price later. Not easy for hobbyists like us to identify when they are young, say 10-20cm.

No worries. We are thinking meeting this Sat or next weekend again. BTW, we were thinking of "closing" the entry date by 01 Feb 09, so that we can concentrate on grooming the growth out fishes.

Nice meeting you today and you have selected some fine kois today. How did we miss them previously?

The growth out pond.

Have only been to Diamond twice and it was a year ago. Lost touch with koi farms after I stop keeping koi for many years. Only recently come back to this hobby and start all over as a newbie and keep koi in glass tank.
