Default Successful Spawning of the Pterophyllum Scalares 'Suriname'

Hi Folks,

Just wanna share this piece of good news with you. After more than a year of waiting, I've finally managed to spawn the rare Suriname angelfish (Pterophyllum Scalares 'Suriname').

It all started around July 2011 when one shipment of juvenile Suriname angels was imported in by a friend. This strain was totally new to me at that time. Did some research and found that it originated from the State of Suriname. While some has speculated that it is related to the Rio Nanay, the Suriname angels have much higher body shape and taller finnage than the Rio Nanay. In addition, the blue speckles on its gill plate is also more prominent. But the most distinct difference between the two strains is that the Suriname has a significantly more pronounced forehead and a more pointed snout. As far as I'm concerned, these two are entirely different strains.

I bought 6 pcs from my friend. But due to a freak accident, I lost 4 pcs. The remaining 2 pcs turned out to be a male and a female. By stroke of luck, I managed not only to pair them up but successfully bred them around early Nov last year.

This strain is significantly more difficult to breed than the Manacapuru, which I've been producing like clockwork over the last 2-3 years. So far, the fries of only one spawn ( the second spawn) out of 4 attempts managed to hatch.

About 1 weeks after my pair has bred, a friend of mine who owns a pair managed to breed his too. Both spawns from us are very small, averaging only about 60 pcs. This is significantly lesser compared to all the other strains that I've worked on in the past.

Anyway, below are some pics to share, which tracks the development on this strain from the day when I first got them till the very first successful spawn was produced. Enjoy!

Hi bro CheckerBox,

Congratulations on your rare success and even more so with the low odds.

Your persistence has paid off.
