Gar
Hi all. I just got myself a juvenile gar.
Please help to ID this Gar. As it is still very small. Im keeping it with my juvenile ornate bichir in a 2ft tank. Planning tp upgrade as they grow bigger. What would be the ideal tank size for me to get in future? What kind of diet should i feed it? Will a HOF suffice? Im planning to use sand as the substrate. With some java ferns n driftwood. It's an alligator gar.
Basically gar are surface breather same as birchir, so no need air stone. Alligator gar can grow very fast in a short span of time so a big tank of 5x2.5x2.5 is quite minimal... do be careful of mixing alligator gar with fishes smaller than it, as often they ended up becoming it's dinner.,. I am quite sure the gar grown rate will definately overtake your birchir so be careful of this... Filtration using a hof is quite sufficient at this current moment. Do note of blind spots in the tank if using hof.,. As u upgrade to a larger tank later on, then can consider using canister or sump system. Cheers |

Wow. Its an Alligator Gar for sure?
The shop mentioned to me that it is a spotted Gar. As im new to this i couldnt really tell despite my research i did on the diff species before purchasing. Barely touched minimal im sure now. Hahaha. The spots were the only thing that convince me it was a Spotted Gar. Now that i look at the pics on the online resources most of the gar species have spots. What is the key feature in my gar that marks it as an alligator gar? I wanna learn how to identify.. Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2 |

[QUOTE=Zacquir;9349314]Hi all. I just got myself a juvenile gar.
Please help to ID this Gar. As it is still very small. Im keeping it with my juvenile ornate bichir in a 2ft tank. Planning tp upgrade as they grow bigger. Alligator gar What would be the ideal tank size for me to get in future? If its well fed, during the 1st year it can reach to 18". So you will need minimal footprint of length 5-6ft, width 2ft-2.5ft. What kind of diet should i feed it? Live feeder, MP or Floating Pallets (MP will be a better choice) Will a HOF suffice? For the mean time its okay while keeping an ornate and alligator gar. If you're heavy feeding to pump him fast, your HOF might not be able to take the bioload. Im planning to use sand as the substrate. With some java ferns n driftwood. Do take note that how "fine" the sand you are using as it might get suck up to your HOF and cleaning of tank might be a hassle with sand as substrate as times come. |

Wow. Thats a fast growthrate. This will be my first. Noted on the tank size. Will it attack my ornate bichir? Considering how fast it grows. Probably much faster than my ornate. I'll provide ample hiding place for the ornate though. But not too much till i cant see my ornate. Regarding the food. Im currently feeding them those small feeder fish. Think they are black mollies as you can see in my picture. Anu recommendations on the brand of floating pellets i can consider? Also what are MP? Im not entirely sure on the shortforms yet. Still quite new to fishbearing. I shall consider using gravel for the substrate or maybe aquasoil with some plants to help with the bioload. Since sand may be too fine. In my future bigger tank. Ive decided to post a few more angle-shots of my Alligator Gar. Any idea on how we can determine the gender? Sent from my GT-N7000 using Tapatalk 2 |
