Can test

Soak the media in pail of water.
Then take out the media and immediately put into separate empty pail.

Let the water drip out of the media. Measure the water and compare to volume of media that it came out from.

I keep the sediment for planted substrate.

You tried pumice stone as media yet?
Using it to good effect in my sump tanks.

I am also testing out coconut fibres and perlite for OHF stacks.

All medias have a shell life. I think it is time to replace your media.
