Advise needed - L046 (Hypancistrus zebra)
One of my male l46 kept erasing another male's linings, both are 3.5in, I am worried the poor fellow might get killed but lucky it doesn't touch the females. Is it ok to leave it that way? Will it eventually kill the male?

Chances are he may kill it. Either to have more caves or hiding area. Or in worst case move the weaker one to another tank.

Gd advise, add more hiding place like driftwood or open end caves cos close end cave might cause deadend for weaker one to escape. Remove it for it to heal better.

The weaker male , chances are will know who is the boss in the tank alreadly so dont really need to take him out . By taking him out you may have reset the order of domination and this will interrupt the breeding . I am not ruling out that the male might get killed . Just spend more time at the tank . Watch the weaker male and see if he is in submission mode or still trying to fight for the top spot .
No No to rearrange the tank as this will bring more fights reason being its a 'new' territory and all hell will break lose again ... A tank shot would be good and a indication of how many m/f in the tank for better advise . |

Alpha can only kill fellow brothers only if the weaker ones are in the cave and the big boy trap him from the outside . During the night , the male will always move around the tank doing 'inspection' Bad luck if the weaker male goes into a new cave . The end . |

When your water is good . The wound will heal quite easily . Nothing much to do for the male . Just more water change this few weeks .
More water change = 1) Wound recover 2) Breed ! |

I do agree with you. If owner is not paranoid, and provided the weaker one doesn't fall into the 'lion den', then it will evade the alpha whenever possible. Time files and the males will be Ok.

when i started with mixing three colonies of l46 sometime back,no matter how many caves you provide,no use only the would be alpha or former alpha learnt his lesson hard, then peace is kept. most importantly is water quality, during this stressful period, you will see scarely bruises on those bigger males, but mine recover swee swee and no more fights.no death.heng heng arh,... |
