IMHO plecos died usually from water perimeters, especially 1~2 days after WC. Dunno why, maybe they are more sensitive to water perimeters changes....for my case its because I tend to do 50~75% WC which is NOT recommended for plecos tank. Also, if tank is smaller, it is worse. So IMO if really wanna minimise losses, 1) the bigger tank the better. 2) more frequent WC but at 25% best and do it at day time when water is warmer.

It is only my opinions/experiences but I'm sure some shifus may know better than me.

Need to have good AC. Dose it around the area where you refill the water. Best is pre-mix. If you have casualty after water change means your water change method is not right.
