Frontosa common questions.
Hi all,
I am new to keeping frontosa. Need to gather as much information as to how to keep healthy frontosa species. (1) Minimum tank Size? (2) Number of frontosa to keep based on size of frontosa and tank size. (3) Substrate or bare tank bottom? (4) What types of rock should be used? (5) Planted or no plant in tank? (6) Need air pump to create air bubble in water? (7) Need types of salt in water change or when setup new tank? (8) Type of Frontosa species and their behaviors based on their characteristic? Which species is most aggressive? (9) Should I mixed different species in same tank? (10) Type of food for frontosa?. (11) How often do I need to make water change? Please add more questions, if there are any that are not in the above list. Thanks for viewing. |

in my experience they are not hard to keep. i think a 422 is enough to house them for life. just make sure water condition is good. the rest dont worry too much, they will be fine.

and they might be aggressive to other tankmates. so choose your tankmates wisely. i only used to keep one solo before, so never really experience it, but they can be aggressive. good luck.

(1) Minimum tank Size?
i would say a 522 is the minimum for a colony,but of cos bigger the better (2) Number of frontosa to keep based on size of frontosa and tank size. based on a 522 tank size,you can keep a healthy colony of about 10? (3) Substrate or bare tank bottom? this is up to you,for aesthetic purpose (4) What types of rock should be used? smooth boulders or granite rocks should be used (5) Planted or no plant in tank? up to you (6) Need air pump to create air bubble in water? yes need (7) Need types of salt in water change or when setup new tank? basic parameters are to have high ph of about 8 and also high hardness of about 13-15.. (8) Type of Frontosa species and their behaviors based on their characteristic? Which species is most aggressive? please go do somereading and research to find out on this,there are many threads in this forum n info on the net.. (9) Should I mixed different species in same tank? up to you (10) Type of food for frontosa?. NLS is recomended (11) How often do I need to make water change? depends on your bioload,feeding regime and type of filter used.. |

Hello
[QUOTE=airwave;7659867]Hi all,
I am new to keeping frontosa. Need to gather as much information as to how to keep healthy frontosa species. (1) Minimum tank Size? Depends on the number of fronts? They will grow fast until initially but the rate will slow down when they hit 6".... (2) Number of frontosa to keep based on size of frontosa and tank size. As above in (1) (3) Substrate or bare tank bottom? Personally I prefer a thin layer of fine substrate.(4) What types of rock should be used? Normal rocks that are not too rough....rocks that you can stack and form caves... (5) Planted or no plant in tank? No plants (6) Need air pump to create air bubble in water? Yes as with all fishes.... (7) Need types of salt in water change or when setup new tank? I used epsom salt for hardness and marine salt to maintain high Ph...(8) Type of Frontosa species and their behaviors based on their characteristic? Which species is most aggressive? I think they are pretty much the same....so far, I have only tried, burundies, mpimbwes and mobas...I feel that the mpimbwes are slightly more active.(9) Should I mixed different species in same tank? I do not think that it is a good idea, my thoughts only (10) Type of food for frontosa?. I give them dried food....hikari cichlid food (sinking) is good (11) How often do I need to make water change? I do it once in two weeks but it really depends on your feeding regime, your filtration, your bioload and the number of fishes you have. Those are my little experience you may want to check with Ornata or Orlandaolanda...they are the men! |

(1) Minimum tank Size?
Bigger the better. I think a min of 4x2x2 ( not overcrowding) 5-6pcs of 4-5 inches fronts with some mid swimmers. (2) Number of frontosa to keep based on size of frontosa and tank size. As above. (3) Substrate or bare tank bottom? Very thin layer of black quatz dennerle prefered. 4) What types of rock should be used? As bro LepZepp and Youngman advice. But not too much rock. Make it simple and nice. (5) Planted or no plant in tank? NO, not nice, very artificial, but no a problem, depend on indiviual. (6) Need air pump to create air bubble in water? If yours come with overflow system, no need. the flow already create the oxygen. movement on the surface. If yours is not, as long as there is ' movement, can liao. Add a small power head to create movement on the surface. (7) Need types of salt in water change or when setup new tank? I used Epsom salt, Marine salt and Seachem tangayikan buffer. This 3 element will do. (8) Type of Frontosa species and their behaviors based on their characteristic? Which species is most aggressive? Burundi and Mpimbwe are the most aggressive. (9) Should I mixed different species in same tank? No, best to keep single variant. (10) Type of food for frontosa?. Sinking pellet with spirilina, MP, mysis is best. (11) How often do I need to make water change? Depend on indiviual. I change between 30%-50% weekly. |

Water chemistry. PH, KH, Temp and enviroment as well as tankmate comming with frontosa. For me, initial set up, add sand, dechlorine the water, let it stable half a day. Add it the Epsom salt, Marine Salt and Seachem buffer, 1 tea spoon per 40 litres. Let the set up stablise for at least 24-48 hr before adding live stock. No ideal if anyone here able to breed |
