Default Koi Curl Gill - due to Coral ?

Other than a slight curled gill near the bottom, koi eating well and lively. Was told it was due to coral. Any similar experiences here ?

Was told to use oyster shell instead. Felt that water clarity is better with coral. Keen to add on coral but concern about better quality koi developing Curl Gill.

Bro...

It will be good if you have a photo.

Gill curl could be due to genetics, water condition (something like high nitrates/phosphate), or parasites like gill flukes.

Don't think coral will cause this directly, bec the effect of coral is to increase pH and buffer. Maybe your friend is trying to said too high pH causing the curl, which may be a possible. If this is the case, oyster shell will have the same problem.

I do have 1 or 2 gill curl koi, but also do not know the cause.

It might also due to lack of oxygen in the water.

I agree. I think it's low oxygen too.
