Mohamed Salah's next Liverpool goal could be worth more than £100million
Mohamed Salah's goals since arriving at Liverpool last summer have made him the talk of England.
His next strike, though, will make Egypt talk. Literally. Salah recently formed a partnership with Vodafone Egypt to promote the telecommunications giant. Last week saw the release of his first television advert in which he is shown visiting various locations around Liverpool. Now, though, Vodafone Egypt have upped the ante. As part of a special initiative, the company have confirmed that for every goal the Reds man scores between now and the end of the season, they will give customers 11 free minutes of talk time. Salah has netted 36 goals in 41 games this season, and given there are still at least nine Liverpool matches remaining this term, it could prove a costly exercise for Vodafone Egypt. According to their website, they have 43 million active subscribers. The average cost in a price plan of a minute is, at a conservative estimate, about 25p. And, using some basic maths, that means that the potential cost to Vodafone Egypt could go in excess of £100million for every goal Salah scores. With that in mind, don't be surprised if the company starts sponsoring some goalkeepers very soon... |

Van Dijk confirmed as new Netherlands captain
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has been confirmed as the new captain of the Netherlands' national team. The 26-year-old succeeds Arjen Robben as skipper following the Bayern Munich winger's retirement from international football last year. And he is set to wear the armband for the first time on Friday when the Dutch take on England in Amsterdam in new manager Ronald Koeman's first fixture in charge. Van Dijk said: "[It is] great news, for me and my family. I am very happy with it, it is a great honour to be the captain of your country." |

Wilson scores first senior international goal
Harry Wilson scored his first senior international goal to help Wales to a 6-0 victory over China on Thursday. The Liverpool forward, currently on loan at Hull City, produced a trademark left-footed finish on the stroke of half-time to put Ryan Giggs' team 4-0 up in their China Cup semi-final. Wilson, who turns 21 today, started the friendly in Nanning after impressing for Hull in recent weeks, winning his second full cap four-and-a-half years after his first. He also provided a neat assist for Sam Vokes to net Wales' fifth goal, before being brought off with 20 minutes remaining. Ben Woodburn started the game on the bench but replaced Gareth Bale - who registered a hat-trick to surpass Ian Rush as his country's all-time record goalscorer - shortly after the hour mark. Wales will face either Uruguay or the Czech Republic in Monday's China Cup final. |
