Default Seeking lighting advice

Which would you buy if both are similarly priced

1. Brand new Maqnum II 55w. 8000K temp.
2. 2nd-hand Jebo 2x18w + 2x18w (Total 72w). 10000K temp.

Wrong... the magnum II is 8000K.

Thanks for the info. 8000K is still better than 10000K right? So which is a better buy? =)

Is the Jebo one using eballast? You got to consider the age of the 2nd hand tubes, may need to be replaced.

How many watt do you require, i assume you are having a 2ft tank. 3wpg should use 72w. But if you do need 72w & the jebo is not using eballast & the tubes are old I suggest that you get another set.

However if you are not going to have light demanding plant go for the Magnum II.

I plan to plant Vallisneria and Echinodorus Quadricostatus. Are they light demanding?

Yes im getting a 2ft tank. From my calculations, 60cm x 30cm x 45cm is only 81 litres leh, which is only about 18g right? So isnt 55w already 3wpg?

So sorry my mistake, yes 55w is enough already. You will need to confirm the colour temp for the Magnum II if it is 10000k then not really suitable, if 8000k then can get.

Hi,

Actually 10000K also seems to work on my plants, have been using them for a while and the effect is about the same. Think intensity is more impt than light temp.

Cheers,

The 6500K tubes have a more yellowish tint while those 10,000K tubes
have a more bluish tint. It seems like its a more visual effect then
anything else

No doubt intensity is important, colour temperature is important
too. So its important to check the colour temperature of the tubes.
Those pink or red tubes are out

Having high colour temperatures will never compensate for lack of light intensity
For 2 tubes of the same wattage, the reach and penetration of a 6500K and a 8000K is the same. However if u compare the 2 tubes with a tube of
10,000K but of a lower wattage, the tubes of 6500K and 8000K are still
better. The reason is because of the higher light intensity due to a higher wattage

Increasing the duration of lights will also NEVER compensate lack of
light intensity and using tubes with the wrong colour temperature for
a planted tank

On the hindsight, do check the tubes and make sure the colour temperature is above 6000K for a planted tank

Is magnum II 55 w comes with the standard length 55 w PL ? Else very troublesome to get replacement bulbs.... As the standard 55 w PL light bulb is pretty long, almost 2 ft.

If it is standard, I go for magnum.
