Lava rocks.
Red ones drop pH. I only use red sparingly for louhan tank as play pebbles and decor for planted tank Black lava rocks I use as media. Strangely pH not affected. Cheap and good.

I think only if the ammonia load is super high then need use media with highest surface area, if not normal ones will be good. I just check my seachem matrix they are still intact after years. That is why I suspect they are soft marble bits.

I using biohome plus now and thinking to try matrix. I read that matrix surface area is slightly more than biohome and is much cheaper. Is matrix durable like biohome? There is another type of matrix which is the pond matrix but the surface area is like very little as compared to matrix. Wondering is it the same type of media or the surface area info is incorrect? I read that marine pure is not durable though the surface area is pretty good for the price like biohome. Thanks.

Yes slightly bigger but the surface area is way lesser. Don't know why also. Biohome bigger piece is slightly more surface area. I remember matrix is some stone. So is really durable but I thinking about the surface area.

The surface area is dependant on the pores in the materials. The smaller size of pore, the higher in no. of pores = higher surface area. With this being equal, the size of the stones will be the deciding factor, the smaller the stone the higher the outer surface area.

Love it
Actually got more of it now than biohome cos gray biohome breaks down a lot. JBL Micromec wears down a bit. Red biohome lasts well, almost zero wear.
