2ft by 1ft by 1ft 5plan tank conversion to marine equipments needed....new to marine
ok erm guy and ladies in the marine section.
I've have a 5plan 2feet by 1feet by 1feet tank. Currently inside I have around 2-3 inches of coral sand +/- grade 1 inside. Just washed only. The tank is not filled currently but I would like to know what kind of equipments and brand I should get. Equipments and accessories I have currently are: 2feet by 1feet by 1feet tank. Red Sea Salt app. 2kg Tetratest Nitrate and Kh. Nutrafin Aquaplus. I know I need a wavemaker but i dunno the size and app. market price and recommended brands. I know I need liverocks to aid in the starting stage of cycling. The stocking plans for this tank are mainly FOWLR. Fishes will only be limited to a pair of clownfish and maybe some gobies. I really want firefish but my tank would be a open top and they've been known to jump tanks so I'm slightly withdrawn from it for now. The rest of the inhabitants would be mainly invertebrates like cleaner shrimps, sexy shrimps, crabs, hermit crabs. No corals for now as I'm going to serve the nation soon and corals would require more intensive care on the tank. I'll add them after my ns though. Need to read up more on coral keeping first also. So people, please help guide me. Thanks |

thanks bro for that link...I've read it before and during then it did not make any
sense to me cause I was not researching deep enough. Well now it's finally making sense. haha. So in other words am i right to say that using liverocks plus dsb in my case which is around 3"-4" after I add in my live sand and complimented with a protein skimmer. That would be able to take care of my tank's filter needs? |

This is what I have for my 3 years 24"x14"x18" tank housing 1 x Sunburst Anthias, 1 x Sally Lightfoot, 2 x Neon Goby and 2 x Flame Goby, 2 x Bubble coral, 1 x blastomussa, 1 x Acan, 1x Sun Coral:
Equipment: 1) 1 x 2028 Eheim Cannister to Chiller 2) 1 x 2028 Eheim Cannister 3) 1 x Deltec MCE600 Skimmer 4) 1 x FR with PO4 removal media 5) 1 x Dual 2' T5 ATI tube Test Kit: 1) Hydrometer 2) NO3, PO4, KH Test Kit Never test Ca & Mg for this tank as I am using natural sea water with 10% (25litres) water changes every two weeks. Dosage: Trace Elements every week, Strontium every 5 days, Phyto every alternate day Hope this helps. |

but is there really a need for a caninster filter if im going to use a skimmer? I
know that it'll be good in the long term. But is it like an option or a must? Any recommendations of good skimmers and lfs to get my stuff? I may be heading to seaview during this few days to check things out. Oh and what is a FR? |

In short .. the cannister is "clean" every two months. The contents in the cannister (3 trays in the 2028) as follows: Bottom Tray .... Ceramic Rings with Filter wool (Mechanical Filtration_ Middle Tray .... Eheim Substrat with Filter wool (Blue type from Eheim) Top Tray .... BioHome Red with Filter wool and GAC Middle & Top trays provide biological filtration. |

If you are having a tank with a sump then you can do without a cannister filter. However if the setup doesn't have a sump then the cannister is the only piece of equipment to provide the filtration to the system as well as water movement. For Protein Skimmer which is able to remove the proteins from the water before they break down into toxic forms and also removes a other compounds is an essential piece of equipment for marine fish keeping. This is one piece of equipment which I must stress enough that you must not skimp on this piece of equipment. Fyi, the Deltec MCE 600 Protein Skimmer for my 2' setup made me poorer by about $600 but then I got a healthy tank for almost 3 years. Indirectly my corals and livestocks are older than 3 years old. FR = Fluidized Reactor is another piece of euipment for a marine setup to provide chemical filtration by maximizing the use of the media by "fludizing" them ie maximum efficiency derive from the media (GAC or Phosphae Removal Media) |
